what do u mean doug? the shifter won't physically move? or ur 4x4 light is still on? if its the latter (4x4 light) its probably a problem with your central axle disconnect.
might wanna hit up
www.naxja.org
too, seeing as ur always on the net
might as well start reading some useful info to fix ur everbreaking jeep

if ur driving an earlier YJ or XJ the front axle has whats called a 'central axle disconnect' this is a b*tch. basically the passenger side axle shaft has two pieces, and the 'central axle disconnect' will slide a sleeve over the outer axle shaft when u put it in 4wd. this also activates the 4wd light. common 4wd failures happen when the CAD doesn't engage. tcase is in 4wd but axles not essentially.
my YJ does the same thing. light stays on for a while but i i KNOW its not in 4wd. personally i don't really care if it sticks with the axle connected, its when the 4wd light DOESN'T come on i'd be scared

u just diagnosed your own problem.
so answer. no ur tcase is just fine
ur central axle disconnect is finnicky. its fine to drive with it still connected. i do. at least ur 4wd will still work.
options: put in a posi loc cable, and u can manually connect/disconnect it. like 200 bucks or something.
or live with it..........

Get rid of the two piece and put in one solid shaft from a newer dana 30.

Yes the axle seal on the two piece axle is different, the diameter of the solid shaft is much less.

Doug,
Which t-case do you have? Command trac(NP231) or Select-Trac(NP242). Usually the Limited's came with the Select-Trac system that has the Full Time 4wd position(basically AWD) and these models don't have a CAD axle.

douggie, if its select trac (np 242) you'll have 5 selections, 2hi, 4hi, 4hi part time (like AWD) neutral and 4 low....
the command (np 231) just has 2hi 4hi neutral and 4low
the 231 will have the CAD axle.....

No CAD axle then. Front axle is permantly locked like the new Jeeps.
Is it sticking in 4wd or just slow for the light to go out? The light is activated by engine vacuum. A line runs from the engine all the way to the t-case and then back up to the engine compartment. Sometimes after you shift out of 4wd it take awhile for the vacuum to bleed off.
