overheating brakes

i have had a problem for a while with my front brakes overheating, this caused one of my front rotors to crack and i ended up putting new rotors and pads on recently and figured this would solve my problems but its happening again! >:(

i replaced all the fluid a couple of months ago but the part store only had dot 4 brake fluid and i was told that was ok. but is it? could this fluid be causing my brakes to over heat?

my next step is to replace the calipers and hope that solves it, i have allready replaced the rear brakes and i know they are working good what is the reason for the over heating?

DOT 4 is fine. You probably have a caliper hanging up. Are both fronts over heating or just one side? It would be strange to have both sieze up. DO you clean and lube the sliders when you installed the new pads?

i did clean and lube the sliders but i am kinda wondering if i did not cook the calipers they overheated badly when i was pulling a trailer with a truck on it a couple monthe ago and they just have never been the same since. :(

I would say the caliper is seizing.  I had one that was smoking BIG time in the spring.  Had to do the calipers and rotors cause I toasted the rotor so bad.  Only got smoky on a few longer trips when I was stuck in traffic.

you need to upgrade your brake cooling system. all you do is run a line from your rad to your calipers, it will cool them off just fine;)

ok that was BS. but you can try it if you want. even i want to see what happens...

what you got is you the caliper pistons are seizing in their bores. could be from age or just cause you go fourwheeling. it happens, thats life. you want to play, you gotta pay. new calipers will be a good idea. second guess would be the knuckles are worn. as in the little spots where the brake pads ride are grooved in. this happens on most jeeps of this vintage. the fix? new knuckles, or, fill in the small grooves with some weld, smooth it out, and bolt it back together.

crappy i know the knucles are a little worn i was looking at them the last time i was under there but did not really think much about it. well at least i an starting to narrow down the possibilities. ::)
