Is my steering stabilizer shot?
« on: April 07, 2010, 03:35:22 PM »
Hey folks - this is my first post here.

Headed out to Flathead River this morning and had to turn around when a bit of rough pavement gave my '09 JK a bad case of the front end wobblies. I was driving over moderate potholes and patches, on an easy curve doing about 70km/h. Front end started a slight bounce and the steering wheel was trying to turn left and right. Gentle braking took care of it. It happened again on straight pavement, again over a moderately rough patch, this time going a little slower, maybe 60km/h.

- nothing looks broken or feels loose

- fluid levels are fine

- tires are properly inflated

- it felt exactly the same as high speed wobbles on a motorcycle (one without a steering dampener)

Is it my steering stabilizer? Here's a link to some images of aftermarket stabilizers: http://www.tellico4x4.com/index.php/cPath/459_442

I would love to fix this myself for under $200, rather than giving a garage a bag o' cash.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, it's still under warranty, but if it's less than a couple of hundred I'd rather fix it myself. Plus aftermarket stabilizers seem a lot better than OEM.

Get it fixed under warranty, there could be a much more expensive issue at hand.  Steering stabilizers ONLY mask issues

take the steering stabilizer off and go for a drive.  then you will know if it is working or not.
