Pitman arm nut/washer size?
« on: June 08, 2010, 04:39:57 PM »
I purchased a new steering box and when I gave them my old one for the core charge they also got my pitman arm with it since I couldn't remove it (to lazy was more like it), and since I bought a new drop pitman arm I really didn't care. But now my problem is finding a new bolt/washer that will work. Does anyone know the grade/thread/size of nut and where to find it and a hardened washer? Thanks in advance for any input. Cheers

google says 1 - 5/16"

you need breaker bar for sure and some penetrating oil would help.  take them to pick n pull and you can even get spares.

Actually I'm looking for what the bolt size is on the pitman arm. Like what thread count is and if its course/fine and the diameter of it. Was going to see if I can find a nut to match at a bolt supply store. Is there a washer? I can't remember. Thanks.

Big ol lock washer on there.

Caliper the shaft on your box for the size, and its definately fine thread. Pretty sure its around 7/8's, but you had best check to make sure.

I would be reluctant to use anything but the correct factory part or something that was very high quality. I would get one pff any jeep at PNP.

A word to the wise:`anytime you remove the pitman arm, check the tourque on the nut once and a while for a few weeks.  My buddy`s jeep loosened up when set with a torque wrench to the correct tourqe, I usually tighten mine more or less as tight as I can get it, use blue threadlock and check it for a few weeks.

This is not something you want coming off while you`re driving!!

I'm using a grade 8 nut and washer. I will check the torque periodically like you suggest. I trailer my rig to and from the bush, no hi-speeds to worry about stuff coming off. Probably lucky if I've seen of 30km/hr yet.
