Call insurance and see if they will class it as no fault. If so, take the claim, let them right it off for 5 grand, buy it back for under a 1000. Between the deductable, and the buy back, you should have enough to afford some upgrades.

In the short term, if you want it road worthy fast, call my uncles shop and see if he can do the balljoints to get you going on your holiday.

Be careful if you do this...I'm not totally sure how this works, and I would recommend you call a registrations office to find out exactly.  Also, this is more for Alberta, I'm not sure how things work out in Saskatchewan.

I believe the vehicle title will change to the salvaged status when you buy it back...you can't register it with this status.  Then once you fix it, you need to have an inspection done (for Alberta, this is an OOP inspection with some additional structural integrity stuff, so probably pricey...say $150), at which point it will change to a rebuilt status (now you can register it again).  This will stay with the vehicle forever, and when you go to sell it, if someone pulls a VIR at a registrations office, they will see that it's been rebuilt.

However, if you're getting $5,000 less your deductible and the cost of buying it back, out of it, then you probably don't care too much what the title status is.

making a claim is out of the question and I need a new axle regardless, I talked to dave and broken axle and I am going to see if he can find something that will work. Bnine, any idea on where the best place to have this done in less than a weeks time?

Go to PNP and get a front axle (HPD30) out of a cherokee...there are usually a few out there...make sure you have the same gear ratio.

Billy's oncle does great work at a real good prices also.

Also keep in mind that you can use an XJ HP front Dana 30, just get one with the same gears. Should be a little easier to find than a TJ axle.

I have a TJ axle coming out, but not right away, and probably not matching your ratio. A 97 sport is usually 3.07.

The axle we are pulling I think is 373, and 99% of wrecker xj's are 355's.

See what Dave can do on short notice.

Maybe just do the balljoints for a tempory fix. Just dont run them for long, or your tires will die a grissly death.

my girlfriend's 97 TJ Sport 4.0 has 3.73's. Maybe she got lucky?

my 97 sport has 355 gears,   better check and you might get lucky with a cherokee axle

By the end of the month I will have the front D30 out of an 04 TJ with 373 gearing for sale (this might be the one BNine is refering to). It will have about 65K on it. I don't know if you can wait that long but if you can send me a PM, and we can work something out.

3.73 - 1998-2006
* Optional ratio used with 6 cyl manual and automatic except the Rubicon
* Standard ratio used with most 4 cyl automatics
* Standard ratio used with 4 cyl 6 speed
* Standard ratio used with Dana 44 rear axle except the Rubicon
from Jeepforum.com

Apparently 3.73 wasn't even an option for the first year run of the TJ

Looks like Yours can only be a 3.07, 4.10, or maybe 3.55.

if you just need a new axle then install any d30 from a TJ or XJ just dont run a front drive shaft .. at least that will get your home or on vacation .

that way you dont have to worry about gears
