Best approach at removing chrome plating...
« on: October 24, 2010, 10:19:26 PM »
I have 2 pairs of Piaa lights, I would really like to use them, but I don't like the chrome look.
My idea was to sandblast them so that I could paint them or powder coat them black.
Also, the mesh guards would be painted as well, maybe beadblast them?
What would be the best approach?

Thanks!

usually if there is someone around who can do the plating they can usually remove it for you for a minimal charge, alternatively if you have access to sandblasting equipment you can sand blast with aluminum oxide 120-180 grit, 120 will give you a pretty rough surface afterward, and you will likely see sparks for the first while while the chrome breaks down. 180 will give  a slightly smoother surface but will take much longer to strip

But it may be worth your while to compare costs of stripping  vs selling those and buying another set.

You do have a good point. Do you think it would be very expensive? I have never done this before.

I could just sell them and buy a black pair.  :-\

I dont think so :D, Chrome isn`t my style.

I`m going to try to see if I can get them blasted at school. If I am able to, I wont sell them anymore.
