« on: July 27, 2011, 10:13:13 AM »
just woundering if anyone has put a xj front axel in a yj and if its a good swap? I have a 94 yj and a 93 xj, the xj is not road worthy and needs to much to fix, i tried the search function but didnt find what i was looking for.

                                                                                                  thanks.

no its not. YJ is leaf sprung XJ is coil sprung. you'd need to cut off the perches/etc on the xj axle and then buy spring perches and reweld them on, buy new ubolts etc.
infact the parts needed just to swap it would cost more than you can find a junkyard YJ D30 for.......

If you are going to that trouble, don't put a d30 in there, go with a d44 or 60 etc.

Tons of people have converted a YJ to coil / link suspension but if they are going to that extent it is usually with one ton axles and coilovers.  Search Pirate, there is tons of info there

if you havent had any issues with your yj for 14 years then why change the suspension. cut the xj brackets off the dana 30 and mount leaf spring pads. its a little bit of work as compared to a lot of work to doing the coil conversion. just a thought. i hope the xj dana 30 is high pinion. if not then not much point swapping anything. or, look for a later xj hp d30 with the larger u joints. then you'll have a much better upgrade over the stock d30.
theres a lot of info out there for this sort of thing, check jeepforum.com or pirate4x4.com
good luck

While on the topic....

Can you swap the gears and the inner and outer shafts from the XJ to the YJ housing?

(both D30/D35)

(I have some issues with ratios and two piece passenger shaft on my YJ)

As long as both diffs are high pinion D30s there are no issues.  No issues with the D35.  However, there is a carrier break for both diffs, one is 3.54 and up, and the other is 3.73 and up I believe.  I don't remember which one is which

As for the shafts, the shafts will swap over no problem, but you need to install a new passenger side axle seal
