When did your interest in jeeps spark?
« on: August 15, 2011, 08:34:54 AM »
I'd say for me watching the ratpatrol with my dad on history television growing up. This came back to me last week when I saw netflix has the ratpatrol and I started watching it again.

Just wondering if there was anything in your guys youths that sparked your interest?

Can't say there was any one thing that sparked my interest in Jeeping/offroading. But, you have definately sparked my interest in seeing Rat Patrol again! LOL.

Netflix has it? I'll take a look...

Ever since I was little, and then I became a full on jeep fanatic when I was 10 and brought home a 69 jeepster commando, we ended up selling the project commando but my interest in jeeps carried on

I've always been a fan of 90's euro cars, boxy kinda look, sporty, etc. First car was a '92 BMW 318i.
Anyway bought my first Jeep after my '98 528i was down and was gonna need more work to get it roadworthy again than it would cost me to buy another vehicle.... so got a Red XJ (of course) and that's when I actually started learning the mechanical side of things... the rest is history. That was only 3 years ago, didn't even know how to do an oil change back then. Now I'm doing engine swaps, diff rebuilds, custom bumpers, etc.
DECEASED - 'Big Ben' (black '97 XJ) : ~9" lift - 35's - Ford 9" - 4.56 gears - armoured up - ...and a sound system that can annoy the hell out of Lemon-aid Jay!!
NEXT - Dark green '98 XJ to build up....

And thank the heavens you got rid of that atrocity...  ;D

I have always wanted a Jeep ever since getting to ride in an old army Jeep as a kid. It didn't ride very good, but sure as hell went anywhere it was pointed at. I was sold.
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

Started out cause we needed something to haul all our junk out to Calgary, along with three screaming cats.  The zj fit the bill for this.  In retrospec, I should have bought the v8 instead of the 4.0, but hey, old Betty Bo made it our here.  A year after we bought Betty Jr, 4.7 wk laredo, and for my 30th, we bought black Betty, our 99 xj sport.  Six months after that and we bought Betty white ('89 xj), parted here out and bought Betty rubble, my '94 yj.  I go a pile of parts to put on the yj, just no garage or time to put them all on.

I love jeeps.

On a family vacation we left Thompson Man the day school was out for the summer on the winter road everyone used in the summer. I swear the whole town left at the same time to beat the forcast rain. Spent a day or so stuck in the mud before we got rescued. There was about 12 people or so in the  jeep flat fender that came for us with most sitting on the lap of some one else. The jeep was an old military surplus jeep complete with soft top. The gas station owners had three of these jeeps. imagine you are like five or six years old and driving down the road in the ruts in the mud in the sand slideing , driving slow. Dad got the car back about a month later when the road dryed up.

Always wanted a Jeep, top off and doors off.  21 Jeeps later, everything from YJs on 35s to XJs on 31s, a 61 CJ3B with a volkswagen turbo deisel, and now back to a 90 YJ,  No regrets.  Just always wanted one......
I'm on my 22nd Jeep.  Yeah, I'm that dumb.

A bud had a cj7 renegade in highschool, but it wasn't until 5 or so years later I was in SAIT that a girl in my class had one that I decided to get one for myself - since then mine has been all over Canada and the US - we even got married in Vegas on a Jeep trip and it was after that when we went to Moab and got hooked on modifying it and making it more capable.  Back then 4" lift & 33's were "radical hardcore" .

I have a neighbour with a 2 year old boy - he loves to walk up to my jeep, put his hand on a swamper, gets a big ear to ear grin, and says "Jeeeeep" - I guess he is hooked pretty young.  Makes us smile - its exactly how I felt my first time wheeling

PS for the missus she always wanted a white Jeep LOL (to quote Peter Griffith "ROADHOUSE !!!")

I was trying to buy a 65 Mustang from a service station owner... we struck a deal, knowing that I was going to raise the money and sell my current vehicle.  Finaly raised the cash and sold my car, went to buy the Mustang and he had sold it to someone else.  I was stuck with out a vehicle.   A work friend had a Dodge Raider 4x4 for sale... that was the start of the love of 4x4's..  Soon turned to Jeeps after the Dodge Raider blew up in the Mojave..!!!!    ;D

Off road started many years ago on the farm in south eastern Ontario. then when I moved to Alberta 5 years ago I had to get a new vehicle because my car would not pass out of province. Originally I wanted a Land Rover for camping and hunting and so on,  but the price was out of my budget. So I started looking at Cherokees much cheaper and lots of parts available.

A co-worker had a TJ kind of done up that took me out with him on a CJA open run, Saw Dom's and I was interested. Rode with Bonny on the cheese slider run, was then hooked. That winter I worked the over time. came out with the stock XJ to the tree clearing projects and then in the spring lift and rubber. and on it went.
Why does your Jeep say Toyota on it?
