rubicon trail 2007
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:03:09 PM »
well its a waz away and alot can happen between now and then
but have been toying with the idea of running the rubicon trail in
california 2007 and wondering if anyone is interested, last year I
chatted with a couple in a tj "rubi" from saskatoon that did it and it
was a blast ...

I know there are tougher trails in the U.S., its alotta ga$ to get there
and back etc, but the thought is it would be worth it - its kinda the holy trail of 4x'ing - think of it as driving back/forth to edmonton 6 times but probably more memorable a decade from now; it might appeal to those
in the light to moderate wheeling catagory especially if your vehicle can highway the trip ( you wouldnt wont to burn up your boggers on the highway);  it would be my holiday time for 2007 ...

I have never been but I read a little on it and recently saw a jeep 4x movie, the trail is east of sacremento calif, it famous as its been crossed by calif jeep clubs for several decades, jeep jamboree runs it and is partially? owned by some jeep clubs, it goes overtop the sierra mtns and lands in lake tahoe nv; there's no fee to crawl over it; it takes 2 days to cross - there are no facilities along the way, its used by jeep and hummer to test vehicles - as most everyone nows the tj rubi is named after it ,
its passable on 31's with bypasses, alot run it on 33/35's and have fun ...

if there is some interest post here and I'll take note, I can do some of the
initial leg work this fall and contact those interested with some details, might be able to get the video again in the future to peek your interests;

I was thinking of the same thing ... I'm not trail ready yet, but would get me motivated over the winter.

watching thread as promised,  will be in touch,  been researching more as information is powerful,

I am gathered some useful information already which will share a little later on, like fire permits (your camping on this trail), when best to do the rubicon etc ...

something else I've learned which didnt occur to me beforehand is facilities in these trial areas,  rubicon / moab etc all have a "pack it out policy" for human waste ... the whole thing makes me queezy but apparently the locals are use to the idea ... but good to know this beforehand ... here's a quote I posted to someone stating that moab also has this issue ... we just take it for granted here you can leave it ...

quote "
rubicon trail same thing,  an enviro group actually did a study on how much waste was being left along the trail per year based on some averages - its staggering ... 35 tons estimated in the 2001 jeep season ... ( see sanation section  in this post
http://www.nea4wd.org/articles/index.cfm?fact=detail&ARTICLE_ID=47    )

land adjactent to the rubicon was closed for several years due to human contamination runoff ... so you gotta pack it out ...

for the rubicon its at least 2 days in 4low to get through so you gotta carry "stuff" longer ... I think that might bother me ... my youngest has been potty trained for 6mths now and I dont miss dealing with it .... I want to do the rubi trail and for this reason alone I am considering hooking up with jeep jamboree usa $$ whom I believe provide pit stops along the way so I dont have to pack/deal with it ... will see ....

"

"finally" a good reason to fold the windshield for this trail , really excited about the idea/history about this trail ...  :D

.  Would be interested in hearing some more information about this. As of right now the idea sounds interesting and would be fun to toy around with over the winter as I'm working on my project TJ which should be finished by Spring.

What kind of "Minimum Requirements" do you have for peoples rigs that are interested in the idea of joining you.

I'm sure you Don't want to have rigs along with you that will hinder you in any way, so I'm assuming that the jeeps or other rigs that tag along will need to be adequately equipped to handle & hold it's own on the trail in question.

How long of a trip are you planning, and how long on the trail do you plan to spend?

Just a quick straight through run or are you thinking about spending a few days/week in the area exploring.....

I was thinking of doing that also if we drive to Disneyland next summer. Did a little looking around and found this site. This guy is a trail guide and even rents his Jeeps out if you fly ar drive a rental car. Check it out. Lot's of good info here.

I've read that Jeeps on 33" tires with one locker is a minimum to run the Rubicon.  Jeeps on 31" tires drag/scrape alot on the rocks!  I guess they test bone stock Jeeps on this trail but I imagine they get beat up quite a lot getting winched and dragged through

They also do a lot of rock stacking to get the stockers through.  Apparently running the Rubicon right after the Jamboree is like driving on  a fire road.  I'm hoping to do it the summer of 2008 with the Toyota guys.  This summer coming up we're going to Colorado and Moab for some wheeling.  :D

We're heading to Colorado in late July for a giant Toyota meet like the one in California in 2004.  After that there's a bunch of Toys heading to Moab for 3 more days of wheeling.  Should be about the last week of July although the dates aren't 100% yet.  Interested in coming?

Do you have Winchs home ph#? Cell? any form of contact? Do you know what hospital he is in?

Phil and I wanna help get his rig out of the bush, but that Yamaha ranger girl is retarded, hasnt talked to the guy, dont know if insurance would want it moved etc..

I wanna help but I dont think we should be scooping his rig if we dont know where he lives or what he wants done eh? Figured you might know him #'s..

If it were mine I would want it out ASAP but it seems like 10 rednecks are going to get it right now and I am not so sure he would want them doing that.
