CB Installation in the Tow Rig
« on: February 11, 2007, 03:51:18 PM »
I am looking at installing a CB and am wondering if any one has any suggestions on the best place to install one? I have a o6' Dodge SLT so it has the floor mounted console in front of the middle seat. This makes things a little tight for mounting anything. I would love to see some pictures of were you have mounted your CB’s. I am also looking for suggestions on were to mount the antenna. I will be hauling a camper so I have been thinking of something up front out the side of the hood. Thanks in advance.

Well, if you haven't bought a radio yet, one of these would make it really easy. http://www.cobra.com/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=5&id=1

The whole radio is in the handheld mic portion, and the "junction box" contains the power connectors, the antenna plug and the pigtail to the mic. Fits super nice under the dash.

There are a few folks around here with them. I for one, have no problems with mine.
As for antenna's, the "beside the hood" bracket should do great. But remember that the antenna "sees" the metallic ground plane beneath it. So if the antenna is on the passenger side of the hood, then you are going to get better tx out to the front, drivers side, and rear; with bad range to the passenger side. Same thing goes if the antenna is on the drivers side, good front, back, passenger side, bunk to the left. *Best* bet, if you vitally depend on the cb, do a dual antenna setup, one on either side of the hood, trucker style. That way you get wickid range all around.

Talk to the guy at ComTek in the RoadKing Truckstop, he can hook you up real good.

Good luck!

I was in the esso truck stop. Kitty corner to the road king. They had the cobra 19dx? for either 75 or 79 bucks  can't remember. A heck of a good deal.  A mistake? I dunno I bought 4 for work though. they are usually around a 100
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.

Typically twin antennas on a pickup truck don't work as well as a single antenna. Twins need to be as far apart as possible(which is why truckers mount them as far out on the mirrors as possible). I believe 12ft is the minimum recommonded distance to have them apart.

Twins will work on a pickup and give ok results but there is no advantage to them over a single. In fact a lot of the pickups you see running around with twins only have one antenna hooked up. They just install the second for the "big rig" look.
