But less pollution has got to be a good thing, no matter the reasoning behind it.

Quoted for truth!

Tom,  you really do love to stir the pot eh?  Taking no sides on an issue that I feel isn't as black & white as some suggest the thing that bothers me the most about "global warming" is that seems near impossible to find any real science on the issue that isn't full of personal ideals and political agendas.  I've got access to thousands of scholarly journals through school and even then I have an incredibly hard time finding non biased "peer reviewed" articles.

You've got people like Gore that spews nothing more propghanda and blatant lies and then you've got the articles to dispute it.  You've got people like "Dr." Timothy Ball who through around fake credidentials to bring validity to their lies and then the articles that dispute them.  Those that preach about global warming seem to have their own agenda's and those that listen seem to willingly buy into the side they "believe" in and ignore the facts from the other side.  I actually had a friend tell me, when we were discussing Gore's Docu-drama, that "Bush lies lies all the time" not his exact words but I couldn't believe he had no problem with Gore presenting false information but when it came to Bush he imposed a double standard and that his lying would not be tolerated.  So if a politician (cause that's all the global warming supporters/deniers are in my mind) lies it's OK if you agree with them and not if you don't???

If we're talking about docu-dramas I found it interesting that another docu-drama, Bowling for Columbine, discusses american's fixation with fear when it comes to the media.  The entire "global warming" debate seems to be fought with fear.  Fear of us all dying, fear of economic downfall, fear fear fear.  Last week after the IPCC released its' recent "findings" that the sea level is expected to raise 7-23 inches by 2100 as a result of warming CNN had a report about the San Francisco airport.  It said that if the sea level does increase that much that the entire air port and half of the bay area would flood.  First of all, if they were stupid enough to build an airport 7 inches above sea level I feel the deserve to have it flooded.  Second, the media seems to overlook the fact that the airport is 13ft. above sea level and the lowest runway is 5 1/2ft. with most being 10-13ft up.  You can do the math...  This is nothing more than the media using fear to sell a side to the story.

OK, rant over, back on topic...if anyone wants to debate "global warming" while taking no sides I'd love to go grab a beer and learn/educate.

The thing with affordable housing is that it needs to be affordable...clever eh?  As a result I'm of the opinion that you can't easily put affordable housing wherever you see fit.  It would be great to have it located by public transportation and I'm sure they are planning around the CTrain expansion but putting affordable housing in the form of Condo's simply doesn't work, in a city like calgary, near the downtown core.  If I were a developer that land is too valuable to try and sell as affordable homes instead of executive condo's that would net big returns.

There are pros and cons to urban sprawl but honestly I'm a fan.  Like Ian said the citizens of Calgary like living in single dwelling homes.  One of the things I like about Calgary and it's build out not up mentality's is the fact that you can live in a HOME close to downtown.  Areas like Sunnyside and Hillhurst give those that value location the option of living close to downtown while still retaining a yard and they pay dearly for it through incredibly expensive land.  At the same time some people don't mind the commute and much prefer owning a large new home with lots of green space and man made lakes.  I would hate to be faced with the decision when buying a house to decide between a yard/garage and walking to work.  The traffic is also not near as bad as it could be with a much more dense population.

At the same time the sprawl makes it very difficult to have an effective public transportation system, something we are really lacking.  However, that issue is as much a municipal government issue as it is an urban sprawl issue.

No time to edit, bear with me.
uh...

Thats why road rage is becoming an issue in calgary.

These cake and eat it to people that smile at you and say, "no, its ok, I dont mind the 20 minute drive from downtown to tuscany" are pretty much full of bleep bleep

You see examples of this mentaility all the time in the right here in the jeep hobby.

Guys make hasty purchases on rigs or mods, find out they are below par but still back those products or push them like they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

What do you expect them to say when they spent several hundred of their hard earned dollars?

What do you expect the person that spent 400$ on house, only to spend 2 hours a day commuting to work? Of course they smile and say, "oh its not bad at all"

I here that everyday around my office.

Ask the same people to reminisce about traffic in this city 10 years ago, provided they were here. Suddenly they have ten examples of how fast they used to get around. Keep them going and they will start to rant about todays traffic.

Really get them going and the stories about hour and a half bus rides because of crowchild backups start to come out.

People are willing to pay over 500$ month to park their car downtown in this city. Reputed as some of the highest parking cost in north america.

Are they doing that because they like their commute, or have half decent transit? Absolutely not. They do it because they hate their commute and will pay rediculas amounts of money to try and make it better.

Again, the same people that smile and say "oh no, I dont mind the 20 minute commute from tuscany".

Anyways, point being, most of those people are full of it and just saving face when saying that.

This city was never set up for a million plus people. That combined with spreading that million plus people over an area of about 2500 square km's with a terrible transit system and outdated road infastructure just leads to more problems.

There is no other way to fix except to start making changes now, and limiting the sprawl.

The reason I moved to MacKenzie Town is to live in an area that is away from downtown so I don't have to listen to the sound of constant traffic and sirens that you hear when you are downtown.  Right now it is a nice community where you can get away from the stress of the city.

IMO if you allow such a big building in this area it will just create a bunch of traffic and noise and the insanity of the city which is exactly what I was trying to get away from.  Just imagine that many more vehicles going through the traffic circle at 7am.

Personally that building gets built I will be moving out of the area.

my 2cents.
