TJ Airbag disable for off road
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:08:00 AM »
Just wondering if anyone disables the airbags for off-raod.
I have disabled the passenger side one by removing a fuse before, but can't remember if the driver-side one has been done, and/or if it is disabled via the same fuse, or a different one, or what.
Are other electrical systems compromised by that?

I tried to search on this, as I'm sure it's been discussed before, but nothing came up.

thanks much

it is my understanding the airbag wont deploy below a certain speed so i don't know why i would.

if i roll or slide down a hill i would want them to deploy when i hit the inevitable tree.

i remember when <censored> took out half the front of he jeep, no airbags popped.

Thanks - You're true, but not quite what I was looking for.
(As far as reasons - if you are say, going hard thru a mud bog or something, and can't see that the far side is a vertical wall, as opposed to a slope out of the bog, then you may decrease speed fast enough to deploy the airbags, but for myself, I would not really want them to deploy.  My seatbelt is good enough for 20km/h, for me.)

If you are going fast enough for them to pop, you want them to pop.

I've seen jeep head on into trees, wound out in 3rd gear low, and not pop the bags. I pull mine because of the kids, just in case. But really, you should never see an instance on the trail that pops the bags, unless it is truly a violent wreck, and warrents th ebag poping.

Just done go clipping any air bag wires in order to disable them.  Clip the wrong wires & you will set what is call a latched code.  The only way to erase these codes is to replace the air bag control modules.$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Be careful messing with that system.

Not to mention it won't pass any further inspections if you ever attempt to sell it for anything other than parts alone.

I thought, and I could be entirely wrong here, that the airbags would not go off if you are in 4 low. Does anybody know?

2nd question. Since my jeep may have been in a couple of deep  puddles and the air bag computer has got wet what are the chances my airbags will still work?  Am I correct in thinking the box under the dash on the top of the tranny hump is the airbag module?
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.

If your airbags are disabled or not functioning properly the airbag dashlight will come on. No light = good airbag system.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

On my ranger....it doesn't have a passenger side air bag from the factory. Instead it's just got a bypass plug behind the panel where the air bag should be. After my accident last summer, when I replaced the air bag with one from the wreckers (so that the steering wheel didn't look stupid with nothing there).....I just went and found another bypass plug from another ranger pass side and plugged it into the drivers air bag. No codes, no hassels.

On TJs the airbags should deploy regardless off gear or speed. They are triggered by a decelerometer. If you hit something hard enough at any speed to trigger them, they should go off. And as Bnine says, that's probably when you do want them to go off. If you want to disable them, just pull the fuse. Light will be on to remind you they are disabled.

They are triggered by a decelerometer.

Actually is it called an accelerometer  :P

If I had a $ for every time a smarta$$ like you tried to catch me in error  ::)...:D

The sensor contains a part that accellerates and we measure its rate of acceleration, so that would make it an accelorometer. But in the end we are measuring the rate of deceleration of the vehicle. So as an overal system is it not really a decelerometer? ...sorry for any confusion. :(

P.S. I just checked the manual and it calls it an accelerometer.  8) You owe me a beer for having to do research.  :D
