Rust proofing and paint
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:29:25 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm kind of new to the city and even newer to this forum.
I have a 1999 Xj and I want to get it rust proofed for the winter. Where do you guys go to get that done? Any suggestions?

Also on my rocker there is rust showing up a bit, I would like to have that painted with rock guard or similar product to prevent the rusting.

Any input on where I could get that done?

Many thanks to all!

Cheers!

Did you do it yourself? Did you use a compressor and paint gun?

I mean to threat the rust before I paint over it, hopefully it'll be good for a while.

i bought mine at c/tire and when it dries you can paint over it for about $6 to $8 a can or you can spend mor and get it by the gallon and roll it on. i waited for a sale and got 50% off for mine and got 15 cans nod only used 2 so far .

Autovalue carries it too

Their prices went up to about $7/can

make sure its the rockerpanel rock guard,.. most of the other stuff cannot be painted and is rubberized.

As for getting at the rust,.. if you want to have it stop all together,.. you have to grind all of it off,.. I think there is also a heavy duty rust stopper I've heard of - Por 15? Apparently the best stuff on the market, but I don't know where to get the stuff, nor have I ever seen it.

What colour does it come in the one you cannot paint over? I would'nt mind black on my red Xj.

If you rockgaurd, make sure all of the rust is removed first or it will rust underneath the rockgaurd.  Personally, I would just remove all the surface rust first, prime it, and then paint.

i like tremclad, but not the arosal stuff. it doesnt go on thick enough. I wire whhell down to steel and then brush on 2 or 3 good coats. I do however thin it out a bit so it doesnt show the brush strokes as much. I have sprayed it to, but it doesnt stay glossy for very long.

I think I'm gonna go with that rockguard and make sure I sand to bare metal and then prime before putting the rockguard on.

As far as rust proofing is there anywhere around town to get your undercarriage shooted with rustproofing oil?
