97 TJ Cig Lighter??
« on: December 16, 2008, 05:38:26 PM »
I've got a 97 TJ and I am not getting power to the Cig Lighter to power my Satt radio...

The 97 does NOT have a specific fuse for the lighter, behind the dash, nor under the hood...

Can anyone give me any advice?

I own a hand crank flashlight if that is any indication how proficient I am with with electronics...

Are there any other electronics that are not working as well? (eg. interior lights) there is a fuse for it but it will be linked with something else, I just can't remember what it is. Did the 97  not come with a secondary power outlet?

No other elec problems....just a lack of Cig lighter power. No external fuse either under the hood or behind the glovebox.

I could just hardwire it...but the lighter is a specific votage..

the satellite radio needs 6 volts (as retarded as that is).  you can hard wire it, just need to buy a female lighter adapter like this

as for there being a fuse, there has to be.  that is probably the most dangerous power port on the vehicle, i will look @ my 1997 and see.

The accessory socket powers up from an accessory relay.    here is what is in the repair manual regarding it:

The accessory relay is located in a connector mounted to the 100-way connector bracket under the driver side of the instrument panel, near the cowl side panel. Remove the relay from its connector to perform the following tests:

A relay in the de.energized position should have continuity between terminals 87A and 30, and no continuity between terminals 87 and 30. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, replace the faulty relay.
Resistance between terminals 85 and 86 (electromagnet) should be 75 ±5 Ohms . If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, replace the faulty relay
Connect a battery to terminals 85 and 86. There should now be continuity between terminals 30 and 87, and no continuity between terminals 87A and 30. If OK, see the Accessory Relay Circuit Test. If not OK, replace the faulty relay

Power for the circuit comes from fuse #3 in the power distribution center.

I did a google search and came up with this:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_is_the_cigarette_lighter_fuse_located_on_a_97_Jeep_Wrangler

'There is a relay next to a harnes underneath the glove box...regular manuals dont show this ... I checked on a dealership service manual and found the location '

I also found this, and I assume it is for a 98':

"Fuse 5 (under the hood) feeds power to the cigarette lighter/accessory relay, which is energized when the ignition key is in the ON or ACC position. The relay feeds power to Fuse 19 (behind the glove box) which powers the cigarette lighter itself and also the extra "Switched power" wire that early model TJs had tucked into the wiring harness behind the glove box."

I remember having to change my fuse when my portable air compressor would blow it.   I just looked in my Jeep and there are 3 on the left side that run off the ignition.  None are labeled, but that would be my guess.
MY 98' FSM mentions an accessory relay. It says, and I quote:
"The accessory relay is located in a wire harness connector that is secured to the 100-wa connector bracket under the drivers side of the instrument panel. near the cowl side inner panel in the passenger compartment.  The accessory relay cannot be repaired and, if faulty or damaged, it must be replaced. "

I also am looking into the page 8W-15-7 of my Factory Service manual, and the Fog Lamp relay, left and right door ajar, wiper switch and motor, stop lamp , and cigar lighter accessory relay seem to go to Fuse 4.  Then again I have no idea how to read a wireing diagram, so I would take this last paragraph of information with a grain of salt.

If you need a picture of the accessory relay, let me know and I can scan it and post it for you.

HTH,

Jeff
