tranny won't shift.....
« on: December 16, 2008, 08:17:58 PM »
over the past couple weeks i noticed when i am at a light in neutral, i push in clutch and go to 1st gear.  there is a little buck (the jeep moves) a bit.

now when i push in the clutch, start the jeep i can put it into a gear as if everything is normal

but if i release the clutch it doesn't seem to work again and i cannot put it into any gears.

ie. push in clutch, start heep, release clutch, press clutch again and cannot put into gear....

anyhoo going home so can check back in the morning.  thanks for lookin'  :'(

slave cylinder?

the bucking thing sounds similar to my old ford. thats what its problem was. slave was leaking and crappy. i only used the clutch to get it into first gear anyways, and powershifted it everywhere else

The buck is probably normal, try this, press clutch and wait a couple of seconds before engaging tranny. I bet it won't buck.
My old TJ did the bucking and I concluded it was the "coasting" of the internals of the tranny and releaseing the clutch before they had a chance to stop after pressing the clutch.

The rest I can't help you with.

I bet your clutch fluid is low,.. here is a good test if you don't wanna check the fluid level,.. If there is just a little bit of fluid in there,.. you can pump up the pressure, before you put it into gear.

fluid in the reservoir is full.

cant check tranny fluid yet, need to pick up a socket

when i start it, pedal down, i can shift no problem all gears.  when i let off the pedal and depress it again, wont shift.  but does seem if i hold the pedal down for a short while it will shift easier.

Here is another test

when you depress the clutch and it doesn't go into gear,.. vigorously rattle the shifter back'n'forth in neutral like you are 16 again watching pamela anderson on baywatch,.. then try it.,...... mmmmmm,... boooobs,.... glad my wife has real ones :D

My tranny doesn't like 1st when it warms right up, so I have to do that at stop lights on occasion

This is a sign of tranny wear,.. or needing adjustment,.. or needing a fluid change

My tranny is just old

Sounds like air in the slave and master Al. See if it works better after double pumping the clutch.

yea sounds like it, that's what i was thinking before.. i tried pumping it and nothing, will try again...

nope, pumping doesn't help.  only when i hold the pedal down does it get a little easier.  can feel it turning though like reverse would grind if i tried to force it.

i thought possibly a little air in the system. but it could also be the internal transmission wind-down. wait a second and then use the clutch and see if it just needs a couple seconds to let things equalize. try power shifting. if it goes int oall gears just fine with a little feathering of the throttle then maybe it is a clutch issue... how has this jeep been since all the work you did to it???
