« on: January 26, 2009, 08:46:39 PM »
i installed the rough country 4" lift on my 2008 jk a couple weeks ago, and now everytime i accelerate somewhat hard, the traction control light flashes like im spinning the tires, but im in 3rd gear, also feels like the jeep is kinda sagging towards theright rear corner while this is goin on.

yeah this happens alot, you havta hold to traction button and turn the wheel  all the way to the right for ten seconds then all the way to the left for ten then center for ten, i belive that does the trick but i cant really remember

Your steering needs to be re-centered.  It has to be DEAD CENTER when you do a lift or the ESP will continue to go off - still tweaking mine now and again to get it just right.  Did you get adjustable trackbars to center your axles?  Hopefully that helps.  Dana 30 or 44 in the front?

Let me toss you a few links on alignment and JK info:

Oh yeah, anything over 3" and you should be looking at new drive-shafts too.  The boots on yours will likely tear and cause massive vibe issues.  And the CV joints won't hold up too well either.  From what I've read the 4-Door's shafts will hold out longer (angle is different).  And the rear tends to go first because the angle is steeper.

As for aftermarket shafts, J.E. Reel makes them, but quite a few people have been sending them back to getting re-balanced.  Tom Woods apparently makes good driveshafts, and with bolt-on or weld-on (can't remember) flanges so if they fail you can just swap the ends vs the entire shaft.  Maybe someone here can recommend a good drive-line shop that can just make them - hopefully for cheaper.

An AEV Procal Module can read the ESP sensor and will tell you right/left/center so you can get your wheels perfectly straight, then adjust the drag-link to center the steering wheel.

And the computer should only need to be flashed if you've changed your wheels or gearing.  Unless you want to totally disable the stability programming - can't remember if that'll kill the ABS though, OR if it can just be toned down a little....

This might help.  Guess you can just kill the ESP portion of the programming.

your lean to the right, sloppy traction and rattling might be because you needed to tighten your track bar up you banana. you should give jamie crap for not doing his side right. hopefully we fixed it up on sunday. let me know. we can retorque everything again soon. later

at the deaership we've had a few people come in for this service. usually with a lift and they would like the ESP turned right off. the jist of the process is to steer the wheel and push the button like someone else said earlier. but we had one that had to have the computer flashed first with the latest updates then we could turn off the esp. it doesnt seem to work right if the new flash isnt performed. but others have worked well without doing the flash. my gues is they didnt need the update. this was all done on 2007 JK's, i have not done any 2008 JK's. my guess is that its the same.

From what i've learned in my JK research. Is that you'll need to re-centre your steering wheel. Even if its off by a bit, you will get the ESP kick in, once you re-centre it, it will still kick in for a bit, while the computer re-learns your driving, and then you shouldn't get the ESP come on anymore.

On the JK, once you go over 3" of lift, you should get a drop pitman arm, most lift don't come with one, so I recommend getting one. Skyjacker sells the only drop pitman arm for the JK's that i've seen.

If you have a 2 dr, you'll need a new rear driveshalt, if you have 4 dr's, you'll be fine for a while. You'll need control arms to get the angle back for the new driveshafts.

And the final thing, is that you probably need an adjustable track bar. Since your jeep is now 4 inchs higher, your axle is probably shifted .5" or 1" toward the passenger side, and this could cause some trouble with the ESP.

You could check that the ABS sensor wire isn't getting yanked around either, might hafta re-route it even.

Off topic here: did they give you new brake-lines or extensions.  If you disco the sway bar you might not have long enough lines anymore.

the lines for the sensors are ong enough, and are clear of everything. the lift i bought came with a drop pitman arm, but it threw everything out of wack and the alignment shop said to take it out, works good with the stocker so far. thanks for the heads up about the driveshaft, ill probaly have to save up and buy a new one sooner or later.my streeing wheel is a little off to the left so that could be why the light keeps coming on, ill have to try re-centering ti and give that a shot. the only other thing i can think of is checking that everything is tight, as lil devil said, my rear sway bar was loose enough you could move it with ur hand.  thanks for all the advice

No prob.  I think my tires just killed an ABS sensor... as I no longer have any ABS and the dash looks like a Christmas tree.  On the flip-side, it stops WAY better now, but pulls like a bastard during hard braking.  Gotta get my wheel centered up and then flip through some codes to see what died.
