Winche at costco

I was just wondering if anyone knows or has tried to install the 8000lb winche for sale at costco?  I am looking at puting it on my 02 TJ and I have a stock bumper.  I was wondering if anyone would know if the plate that comes with it would fit without too much trouble or replacing the bumper?  I do want to do the work myself.

at worst case you drill 4 (or 6) new holes into the plate that has way to many holes to start with.

Thats what I was thinking.  Also the other thing I just remembered is it requires a 650 cca battery.  The one in my tj is only 500.  If I buy a 650 will it damage anything in my jeep?  I don't know much about batteries probably obvious  :? .

Nope, also I was running a 500 CCA battery for about 1.5 years with my warn 8274 which at full load drawns about 450 amp with no problems.  If you are only using your winch occassionally and your charging system is in good health and I wouldn't worry about the battery yet.

What exactly does the cca affect anyway?  Also is it as long as it fits and its 12v that it will work?

CCA is the cold cranking amps, and that is what the winch draws if your engine is not running.  When the engine is running the alternator is charging the battery, so there are 2 ways to get around the amp draw of a winch.

1.  What output alternator like around 140-160 amps, about $300.  Stock alternator on XJ, YJ, and TJs are 90 amps
2.  What outpur battery around 800-1000 CCA, about $90-220

Check the winch plate. I'm pretty sure that it will have problems mounting on a TJ due to the sway bar. It either has to be cut to clear or order a new winch plate from Champion(they have one specifically for TJ's) or any other aftermarket supplier. A friend of mine had the same problem and just decided to go with a new winch plate.

hey i'm thinking of buying a winch, does the costco one work well? how much is it? and does it mount easily on a YJ?

It works fine on mine!!!!  Had to drill 2 holes in the plate to mount it.  I used the stock bumper and had to clearance the bumber where the winch bolts to the mounting plate.  Took about 1.5 hours to install and drill.  I do recomend a drill press it makes drilling the plate much easier.

I have had the Costco winch for about 3 months, worked great.  I got in a nasty mudhole about a month ago and was winching out of it when the small screw that holds the cable on the drum sheared ( I still had lots of cable on the drum).

I had the supplied winch plate cut down and mounted it on a piece of 2" X 8" channel.

I will be finding out how good the warranty is next week as the winch now isn't sppoling smoothly.  Time to take it off and see whats wrong.

Is the 8000lbs winch generally in stock?  i can't find it on their website only their 2000lbs one

One guy on here has blown one up. But to be fair, it was pulling really hard. Im sure he'll post on how the warrenty goes when he gets it into them, but I think he's on holidays right now.

From what I've seen, they seem to work ok, and pull hard. I just wouldnt overload them.

To be safe I'd recommend running a snatch block on any moderate to hard pull. A snatch block will cut the load on the winch in half. If you do plan on that route, a 50 foot or so cable extension in your trail gear would be a good idea. You can build one from stuff at princess auto for about 20$.

Ya I blew mine up but in all fairness it was pulling pretty hard, I'm taking it back this weekend so I'll let you know how it turns out :wink:

Cosco has a 1 year no hastle refund policy. as long as you have everything that came with it ie: snatch block, manuals....
