I've heard of diesel engines in compact cars...   But not Jeep...yet.  A diesel Jeep is waaayyyy overdue.

What do you mean, the Liberty had a diesel and the new Grands have a diesel, what more do you want?

So what can you tell us about "soon to be smaller Cummins engines"?

That's pretty unspecific. Are you talking about A series engines, or something new around that size?

Sorry about the vague info but I don't believe in sharing rumors.  I DO know for a fact that Cummins finished development of v6 & v8 engines that they released to Chrysler for testing in a number of different platforms last summer.  Which one ends up in what...I don't know yet. 

Here's something from www.allpar.com  - 

The diesel Grand Cherokees - which outsell gas GCs in Canada - will get a 4.2 liter Cummins V6 built in a new factory 2010, with the next generation (190 hp, over 400 lb-ft). This and a 5.0-liter Cummins V8 diesel will be used in Dodge Ram pickups as well. Chrysler was allegedly looking at the possibility of diesel Chargers or 300s for the US. The 4.2 liter Cummins V6 is said to have 190 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Gas mileage with this engine in the Grand Cherokee is likely to be about 20 city, 25 highway, far better than the 4.7 V8 (14/18), with similar acceleration.

Jeep Wrangler,
Jeep Scrambler (Jeep JT)A concept pickup, called the Scrambler, was closely based on the Wrangler; later, the Jeep JT, essentially the same thing, was created. For details: Two door Wrangler - Four door Wrangler (Unlimited) - Scrambler pickup. The Scambler appears to be out of the picture for the moment (though it would be handy), but the limited production AEV Brute may be increased in number and cut in cost thanks to Jeep involvement. Update: the Scrambler appears to have been completely dropped; the Wrangler will get the new Phoenix engine but not a four cylinder.(dated info already )
 
Grand Cherokee
Jeep CommanderRumors say the Commander will be deleted, but the Grand Cherokee platform (still called WK) will be used for the next Durango, in standard and stretched versions. For the 2011 Grand Cherokee, we’d hoped to see a 4.2 liter Cummins V6 with 190 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque with around 20 city, 25 highway, but we’ve been told to expect the same Mercedes 3-liter V6 diesel, with other engines being the 3.6 liter Phoenix engine and the 5.7 Hemi. The new 3.6 should outrun the original 4.7 V8. Details!
 
Jeep Liberty
Dodge NitroThe Dodge Nitro goes on-road path and the Liberty stays off-road. The Nitro is based on the Jeep Liberty, and is built on the same line; but it is not expected to last past this generation. The Liberty will not be getting the 4.0 V6, it doesn’t fit. Wait for the Phoenix!
 
Patriot and Compass
No diesels for the Patriot and Compass; but electric power for Patriot by 2013. U.S. emissions requirements are tough to get around and Americans aren’t willing to pay the price premium (so far.) Nicely redone interiors and a bit more sound insulation make these cars much more attractive, though the back seats remain el cheapo.
