This is the most affordable source for synthetic line.

This guy sent me 4 extensions, totalling 8 eyelits and 125 feet of 3/8's amsteel blue for under 2$ per foot. To my door, tax in.

thats a good deal

i ended up calling my old shop and they said for cost wise steel is the way to go.

they didnt have anything greater than a 5000lb in stock at 3/8,  could get stronger, but not worth the cost.

he suggested a 5/8 line, but that'll take up too much room on the spool i think. might get 60' on the spool.

^^Knows first hand about tow hook mounting^^  :o
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Another question on cables. How does one put the copper attachment on the cable at the winch end as seen below? The cable I bought did not have anthing on the winch end. I have the little eyelet but how does one attach it to the cable?

My greatest fear is that when I die, my wife sell all my stuff for what I said I paid for it.

Make sure all your tow points are solidly mounted!  I was giving a tug to a stuck XJ with my strap - I heard a "thunk" as something hit my YJ.  Everyone was out of the way and I didn't see any damage to the back of my YJ, we found the tow hook under my Jeep that was previously mounted on the stuck XJ.  You hear about these things but I never thought I would see it.  While having some maintenance and repairs done (thanks Jay - it's all good now)  a good dent was found in the gas tank skid where the flying tow hook hit.  Fortunately nothing serious happened - it was my lucky day, I'll have a close look at the next tow hook that I hook my strap or winch cable to.

Tom, did that XJ have the factory reinforcement brackets? Someone on here for awhile was advocating bolting the tow hook onto the XJs swaybar brackets. Glad no one was hurt.

For putting the copper lug onto the end I use a battery terminal end and "crimp" it on with a blunt chisel and hammer. Its NOT meant to take ANY load at all. Just to help spool on the cable. Always leave 3 wraps on the drum or you will risk pulling off that lug.

I like to run 3/8s cable just for the simple fact that is spools on nicer and doesn't get flat spots as easily. Nothing wrong with 5/16s though.

My steel cable is galvanized. I thought you weren't supposed to weld galvanized?
