I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Please don't!! I already had to try and get two wheels off a YJ that were welded on by a previous owner....some people! :D

No, you're not. At least asking the question doesn't indicate idiocy.

The guy in question welded his pinion gear (attached to his driveshaft) to the ring gear of the carrier. This would keep anything from turning in the diff. He no longer has a diff, he has the world's most effective parking brake. And it's always on.
