88 Commanche 4L no start
« on: March 22, 2009, 05:04:48 PM »
just thought i would ask some othe opinions.

my buddies 88 commanche has been sitting for 2 years under a tarp outside.  so we dug it up today to see if we could get it running.  pulled it out, threw in a new battery and cranked her over.  didn't start.  engine turns over but doesn't fire.  i put new fuel in the tank (10L) and the tank was pretty much dry.

so anyways ya coulnd't get it to fire. engine is a 4L 160k.  checked pressure in the fuel rail, it looked ok, there was lots of spewing out.  checked spark, and i think thats where the problem lies.  no spark.  so tomorrow, we're gonna change plugs and wires, (changed cap and rotor today)

if this doesn't get it running, gonna look to a new ignition coil as well as CPS.

just wondering if anyone else knows of something to look for etc?

cheers, John

x2, CPS wire on that Jeep has been problematic in the past. Too much mud and stuff  got in there over the years. :P

Save time and money and just do the CPS. Its located on the tranny bell housing at about the 1 o'clock as if you were viewing the engine from the front. The connector for it is near the back of the engine, driver's side, near the fuel rail. If you can find the wire you can follow it down to the sensor.

I find it is easiest to change using a 3/8" ratchet, some extensions, a universal joint and I believe a 10mm socket. Lay under the jeep and snake your left hand up the back of the engine to hold the socket on the bolt head. With the right hand guide the ratchet and extensions up along the the drivers side of the tranny.
