Survival course
« on: April 13, 2009, 08:31:54 PM »
I know that this is kinda last minute for the non members, but we are having a survival training camping trip this weekend (April the 17th through 19th). We will be camping at the Ghost Airstrip out in Wiaparous in the group camp area. Our instructors name is Brian, he is very qualified in many areas of emergency first aid and survival techniques. If you would like to find out more about the courses that he offers try the link www.raems.com. He has designed a course specially for us which includes the following:
-proper preparation
-cold effects on the body
-basic casualty survey techniques (and the ever present ABCs)
-the priorities of harsh area survival (rule of threes)
-emergency shelter using carried items and improvised items
-firemaking in cold/wet weather
-finding water
-emergency treatment of injuries with basic items
-direction finding
-psychological pitfalls
-and the basic personal survival kit

Please keep in mind that the course content may be altered a bit depending on the weather at the time of the course but rain or shine I am sure that we can all benefit from our instructors vast wealth of knowledge. The things that every individual needs to bring is a reasonably good knife, a couple of extra wool socks, a contractor sized garbage bag, a pad for sitting on, and a flashlight. Any items people may find useful should come too, as we all learn from each other a lot of times.

The individual cost will be $80.00 per person. The cost of the campsite will be covered in this price. We would like to keep the age 16+ though some exceptions can be made, please contact me if you have questions . We will go rain or shine, +30  or -30 please prepare either way for the weather.  We will be inviting several other groups around Calgary, alot of the people you may recognise from trail projects. This event is open to close friends or family members, but we will be passing out the waiver forms for insurance purposes.

This promises to be a really fun and very informative weekend,  There is also another CJA event that will be taking place on Sunday the 19Th. Anyperson that is coming on the survival training weekend will be invited to this event.  If you have any questions or concerns please send me a PM and I will do my best to get back to you right away. Please contact me if you are intersted, you must contact me before showing up. Hope to see you there,
Lindz

We were just going to keep this event for club members only, then more than half of the people that initially said that they were wanting to come backed out. So we decided to put it on the open forum to try and make it worth spending the money on the group camping area.  We are gauging whether there will be any future events of this kind by the success of this event, so there may or may not be a next time.

We even went for a run on Sunday and had home made chili back at the camp.
