Towing Capacity: help
« on: April 15, 2009, 03:37:50 PM »
I might be sifting through old threads, but I was wondering what is the tow capacity of the 4.0l 4x4 Cherokee?  I read 5000LBS, but I was wondering if that is the gross weight including the jeep and the tow - or can it actually pull the 5000LBS hitch weight - Anyways I'm rambaling,  please help clear my thoughts

You probably don't want to try towing a 5000 pound trailer with a 4 litre XJ. While it may work for a while, it's not what I would consider a wise pairing of tow vehicle and load.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

True true, I don't intend on towing that much, I don't have anything to tow anyway, lol.  but I will be buying a camping trailer soon and was wondering if anyone had the "Official" tow specs

;)I had a 98 cherokee, 4.0 L auto with tow package, 3.55 gears and it was rated to tow 5000 lbs.  this is the weight of the trailer it is SUPPOSED to pull.  I put a 3400 lb travel trailer behind that Cherokee and it was all it could do to maintain 80km/h.  I pulled the trailer for a 6 mile round trip, no wind (or at least very little) and no hills.  Engine was fully tuned up and had a few small performance mods (nothing serious).  We wanted to see what we could pull BEFORE we bought the trailer.  That six miles cost me an engine >:(.  My advice??  unless it's a tent trailer of a jumping jack trailer, DON'T DO IT!!!  I'm sure that there are those here that will disagree, but it all boils down to frontal area of the trailer (wind resistance).

Thanks - Ya I was hoping to get a small single axle travel trail something like 14 feet max - or even a tent trailer -   plus my engine runs good, but it may be tired with 230xxxKMs  so I don't want to push it
Thanks again

I believe it's 3500lbs capacity with manual transmission and 5000lbs with automatic with transmission cooler.
