Jeep TJ 4.0 L Engine
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:19:11 AM »
I have a question regarding the 4.0 L motor in my 2001 Jeep TJ.
I am having mechanical issues (I will not get into how badly may make some people cry) and have been told by my mechanic that it would be cheaper to replace then repair. As I am doing the leg work to find a replacement engine...am I commited to replacing it with an engine from a 2001 TJ or is the engine from say a 2006 Rubicon going to work? And if I was going to have it replaced does anyone have any suggestions on mechanics be it a backyard or a licenced shop, as I am not a spaz with a wrench but would much rather have it done right. And if it is a backyard mechanic that offers to help I would definetly help which would be great to get my knowledge up. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you need a second opinion. Is there internal damage?

Jay (Lemon Aid on this site) at Chanda motorworks used to work for chrysler, so he has alot of experience with the 4.0's, should give him a call - 287-3350 - can also locate you an engine if it's needed...doesn't have to be from an 01

You know what is funny...I took my Jeep too Jay when I first bought it and he was very helpful with repairs and I meant to call him but forgot the number and his name (Lemon-Aid) so thak you very much for the help. I was going to get a second opinion anyways but in the mean time I found a 2006 4.0 L for sale that sounded promising.

Whats wrong with your old engine?  I may be interested in buying it from you.  Looking for a rebuildable core.

Re old engine
Is the block Ok - what is wrong with the old motor. If it is able to be rebuilt someone may be willing to give yopu a bit of cash to take it off your hands for a long term rebuild project. Send me a PM I may be willing to grab it off you if the block and head is not screwed.  How many miles were on the motor?

Mike's old motor was put in his XJ brand new.... then he wrote-off the XJ. I believe it was a 6 spd tranny... no, not a crossdresser.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

You would have to ask Jay (Chanda) to find out exactly what is wrong and if it affects the block. I will take offers but I am also going to talk to Jay and see if it affected the block and if it did not I may keep it myself to turn into a 4.7l Stroker it just depends on the offers I receive and I know it is not worth much but if the offers are only a case of beer or a couple bucks cash then thank you very much but I will pass.

My 4.0L sold, still have the trans though.  If it's a bad knock on the bottom end, it could be a bad bearing.  Mine let go on Hwy #2 and even if I would have stopped at the time once I heard the engine knocking (about 5 secs before it left a hole in my block), it would have needed a bottom end rebuild which is expensive.  More expensive than what I could have got a good used motor for, if I could have found one at the time.  I'd get Chanda look at it to let you know how bad it is before you do anything, just so you know.

IMO, look out for something used, 2000 + model year.  In 2000, they moved the alternator up and changed the intake slightly, I believe.  While you wheel your Jeep this summer, you could get the old block built into a stroker and then sell the slightly used one later on.  Otherwise, building a stroker locally is $$$$  ($4K+).  It's almost cheaper to buy a stroker out of the states, Titan Engines was the cheapest I found at around $3000 US + core.

Make sure the new motor is a minimum of 2000 or later. Like mike said, things were moved around, and earlier models will make the swap for you expensive.

I have a 4.2 crank and rods in mint condition for doing a stroker if you are interested in collecting parts for your project. 100$.

Find out what is wrong with your engine before replacing it.
