Ways to identify an AMC engine and size?
« on: April 24, 2009, 10:49:03 PM »
Hi,

So my problem is, is that I stumbled across a bastardized 88 YJ... And
am see more possibilities in it as a project then I probably should be.
I need some advice to identify whats in it for an engine. The current
holder of the YJ knows nothing about the Jeep or the engine that
is in it. The only way I think its an AMC is because of the location
of the distributor and the fact that on one of the exhaust manifolds
there is written in white paint "AMC 360".... between the 304, 360
and 401 are the exhaust manifolds interchangeable? Are the heads,
intake or carb interchangeable?

In YJ's did they ever come from the factory with an automatic
floor shifter or did they all come with column shifts?

Any help would be great!
Thanks

Yj's came with column shifters only. Likely it's an aftermarket shifter.

As for the AMC V8, on the driver side of the block you will find the displacement cast in the block. It is located under the driver side engine mount.
All of the bolt on accessories from any of the AMC V8's will swap between them all. The exception being 360 Flywheel or Flexplate. the 360 is externally balanced and you need to keep a balanced 360 part with a 360.

Thanks for the info.
Are the engine mounts on all 3 blocks in the same position/location? (on most?)

Same bolt pattern on the AMC V8's. The transmission will fit 1971+ 6 and 8 cyl motors !
This makes the AMC V8 a great swap for the 4.2L.  :D
