Power Steering Fluid on Serpintine Belt = Premature Wear?
« on: April 29, 2009, 09:02:44 AM »
My PS pump gave out last night & blew PS fluid all over the engine bay, now I just purchased a Goodyear Gator Serpentine belt when I bought the pump in Jan. Did this fluid just kill the belt seeing as it's everywhere? Do you think if I raise some crap at the parts store for the pump giving out on me like this that they would honor a new belt due to the fluid being everywhere, or does it just need a good rinse?
Thanks!

Have fun with this one......... I overfilled my PS reservoir last spring (never have a conversation with your wife while filling fluids BTW) and had a bunch blow back all over the pulley's and belt I have been rinsing, powerwashing, soaking in engine degrease just about every two weeks for the past year and she still tends to scream like a bat out of hell whenever she gets a little wet, and I apply a few RPM's to it. the good news is it is getting better. I would suggest talking to the parts store and if it was a bad part discuss them paying for a new belt and engine shampoo as that fluid is really hard to get off, the under side of my hood is still stained despite all the washing I have done.

Thanks.. the engine bay is a nice mess...
I'll see what happens when I get home I guess, just glad that the pump is under warranty regardless..
I was just under the impression that the PS fluid will eat the belt like engine oil..
I'll make sure my wife is not around when things get put back together & ready to top up...  ;)
