Rear Driveshaft U-joint Replacement
« on: May 03, 2009, 08:37:10 AM »
Can someone who's familure with the ZJ rear driveshft chime in here?

So I started with the process of elimination, I'm getting some vibration in the drive line under load, I removed the front DS & took it for a quick around the block, problem is still there. I suspect it to be one of the rear DS u-joints as I was infomed previously from a mech that one of the rears were bad. I'm going out to remove the rear DS in a bit here & have already picked up a u-joint for this just in case. The u-joint has the c clip application. Is this the u-joint that I need, there were a couple options at the parts counter & how do I go about removing the old u-joint? I've never removed the c clip type before. Thanks!

I should also mention that I haven't taken a look at rear yet, I have to do some quick running around for the wife before I get to crawl back under.
Thanks!

I highly recommend the Princess Auto u-joint tool to make this job go alot easier, especially if you plan on doing your own work on your Jeep regularily.  Actually the whole ball joint tool set is even a better idea.

Well I spent most of my morning on google before posting.
I'm planning on just using the socket & hammer method for now, I guess I'll just have to get under there now that I'm done running around.
Thanks!

Use a bench vise, way easier than trying to pound it with a hammer.
I just can’t resist a good mud hole!  🤦

I need the tool to remove the rear driveshaft, nothing like removing the front one at all, thought I could just unbolt it & change it out on the table.
The only thing I'm not clear on still is the type of u-joint used here? c-clip or no c clip type of u-joint?

Thanks for the replies...
I'm such a maroon... I figured I would have to use this tool in order to remove the rear driveshaft from the transfer case tail shaft, but I guess it just slides out once the opposite end is unbolted. Theirs a first for everything I guess...
