Front passenger seat not going forward correctly.
« on: November 13, 2005, 03:49:48 PM »
The front passenger seat on my '97 TJ has stopped diving forward correctly, it slides back and forwards correctly, and the seat back angles properly, but the last stage of pushing it forwards where the whole unit tilts up and forwards doesn't seem to work right. I think I know what the problem is (I think a piece of plastic broke off that surrounded the trigger for this, and now the two pieces that are meant to make contact, don't), but I'd like to make sure before I just pad out the little lever (just in case something is actually bent out of alignment that shouldn't be).

Does this seem familiar to anyone (am I making any sense what so ever).
I would really appreciate it, if I could see a picture of under someone's front passenger seat, so I can compare it to mine.

Thanx,

Dale

This is common on the '97 - 99's. If I remember correctly, the cable that is attached to the the pull tab on he seat has come disconnected. You need to remove part of the seat cover to access it to fix it. It's kinda like a bicycle brake cable. Sorry, it's been a while since I owned my first TJ, but it did hapeen to mine and my girlfriend's Jeeps, and I was able to fix both of them. Wasn't that hard once I was able to see what the problem was.

It will be down at the bottom (at the back of the seat) where the tilt lever is.

Thanks,

I'll check it out. Would this result in the seat working fine, except for the final 'dive' that it does under the dash?
The pull tab works, and the seat goes forward, but the final phase in the movement doesn't complete. I can get it to do the last bit if I manually depress a little lever that is underneath the seat, and I can see the part that I think is meant to trigger the lever going down, but the two parts are about 1-2cm away at their closest (which is where the seat is supposed to begin the final 'tilt'. I've been finding little bits of plastic under my front passenger seat since shortly after I got it, but I'd just kind of assumed that the previous owner 'lost' something in the seat that was getting ground up as I used it. Now I'm not so sure, I was kind of think that this may have been something that caused these two pieces to make contact.

At any rate, I'll have a look to see if I can see what you're talking about.

Thanks,

Dale
