Who builds the best stroker in Calgary
« on: May 12, 2009, 03:33:13 PM »
I did a search but didn't find much... so here it goes... who builds the best Jeep I-6 stroker (i.e. quality & price) in Calgary?

I was eyeing up a "Titan Monster 4.9 300 Cubic Inch Jeep Stroker 315 Horsepower 345 ft lbs. of Torque" on Ebay... but w/ exchange, core, shipping & GST... its gonna work out to about $5K... way too much in my opinion. I was hoping to get the same build locally for less and support local business.

Anyway... looking for a decent shop that will work with me on what the "best value" build is for my Jeep and take my stock 4.0L as a core.

Any suggestions?

I think the key to stroker vs. swap is how much HP & torque a guy is looking for.

<300HP... stroker will be cheaper
>300HP... a V8 swap may be in order

I priced out a V8 swap and doing everything myself with a "running" late 80's corvette TPI 350 (245HP)... and I would be sitting  at $6K. To rebuild it all before install... the bill w/ tranny is about $10K.

Conversely... it would appear that a guy could do an affordable stroker (4.2L crank, 4.2L rods, 4.0L factory pistons, 4.0L head, aftermarket cam, 4.0L fuel injection, etc) for about $2500 and have a fresh engine with about the same HP & torque.

Come on guys buy a 4.0l get a crank and rods and go from there. The head can be bought off ebay cheap enough 7120 head. I'm building a 4.6 right now real cost in real time  8)

Here is a link for the best items to look for and ask ask ask.  You can get pistons for 4-5 hundred and that is only if you need the ones for a 4.0l rod.  The 258 rod pistons are just as cheap to buy not cheap quality.

Check out this link. http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/selection.html

I have the 12 weight crank and 7120 head missed on the block. I'm using carb as mine didn't have fuel injection to start with. I'm having the head ported and have a header thanks GearHead.  Should be an honest 260 hp  if not more. I will be using a 4 barrel Clifford Intake with a 500 Edelbrock.  I will let you know total cost as it goes together also using sbc roller rockers I get two extra but hey its cheaper then the Jeep one still.

Thanx for the link... I have been studying that one  a fair bit over the last few days. It it wasn't for that link... I wouldn't know enough to even start this thread  ;D

I am starting with a 1997 TJ.  I already have the 4.0L block, 4.0L head & fuel injection... need the 4.2L crank, 4.2L rods, cam, rebuild kit and machine shop services.

The reason I am asking who does the "best Calgary build" is I called a few motor rebuild shops today and neither seemed all that keen on doing a stroker. They pretty much said they would machine as per my instructions... but it would be nice to deal with a shop that was even marginally intertested in or knowledgeable regarding the build... that way they could provide some input or at least be in the know when I ask questions. For example... you mentioned using SBC roller rockers... I didn't know that could be done & it would be nice if the builder could make such suggestions.

It would also be nice to start with a shop that either has or can source the block, head, crank, rods, etc... do the build... then exchange my 4.0L. That way my Jeep is down for a weekend not 2-4 weeks.

350HP SBC crate motors were around $2500 the last time I got one, 700R4 about $1400. And the motor has a 1 Year GM warranty.

Thats carbed though Dale. The cheapest GM crate with stand alone injection is the Ramjet 350 and it comes in over 6k just for the long block and injection.  I beleive the price for a fully dressed ramjet is close to 10k. Then there is trans, radiator, gauges, fuel system, and motor mounts to address. It adds up pretty quick.

As for a stroker, dont expect a high quality stroker for less then 4-6k. Getting a 4.5/4.6 to the 300hp or close to mark takes a lot of little stuff that will add up.

Corey Kruchowski is the guy you want to talk to on this board. He is out of grand praire. Him and the machine he uses specialize in after market 4 litre work. From mild strokers to 500hp forced induction units.

I have a crank that you can use to get you started. Get that up to corey, and have him find you a 4.0 to start from.

My motor is was right around 6500 including the hesco aluminum head I swapped in last month. I am definately pushing close to 300hp, or perhaps a touch over.

Talk to Corey. He will get you fixed up.

A V8 swap is not cheap that's for sure. On Ebay right now... Sewell Parts Online is offering Brand new "no start" factory engines complete with Fuel injection, oil pan, manifolds, water pump, etc for a CRAZY low price.

360HP, 6.0L New-Factory-GENIV-GM-Vortec-V8-Engine-Crate-Motor, $3200 USD, Ebay Auction# 390035357327 (this is the high $$$)
260HP, 4.8L New-Factory-GENIV-GM-Vortec-V8-Engine-Crate-Motor, $1900 USD, Ebay Auction# 390041698490 (this is the low $$$)

As cheap as that is... starting with the cheaper motor, CDN-->US exchange, GST, brokerage, shipping, wiring harness, accessories, gauges, adapters, rad, tranny, converter, shifter, drive shafts, etc... it came out to an easy $10K and that's doing it all myself and starting with one hell of a deal on a motor.

Corey Kruchowski? I know that guy. I tried to buy his CJ7 off him a couple of months back... but in the end he decided not to sell. Seems like a pretty decent & helpful dude. I have his email address and will contact him regarding "the stroker" project.

I will PM ya and we can discuss the crank... thanx much ;D

Bnine... I thought I had Corey's email address... but I must have deleted my CJ7 folder. Any chance of someone putting me in touch with him or him in touch with me?

I also PM'd ya about the crank.

Thanx again.

Bnine... never mind... I just figured out how to get in touch with Corey on the site.

Anyone else have any suggestions on who to talk to regarding a stroker build... preferably local?

Thanx.

I'm using carb as mine didn't have fuel injection to start with.

Dude, go EFI. It's not that hard. I did the swap into my YJ and at the time didn't know anything of EFI. I have a lot of info still that could help you get it done easy. Probably be way cheaper than aftermarket carb and intake as well.
