97 ZJ tranny issue

so i bought this thing with the belief that the head gasket was gone (thats what i was told) however, after playing with the engine and running it for a while, changing the oil and so on, (no antifreeze in oil)  i believe its ok. there is an oil leak but it looks like a rear main.  so i'm thinking it has a tranny issue. 

i think they blew the tranny and the 'buddy' they talked to thought it was a head gasket for some reason because it was so full of oil, (chick who owned it over filled it)

so, put it into gear a couple times. first time, it doesn't do anything. give it some gas, and it literally revved to 2500 before it did anything.  then a very horrible squeel was heard, a constant squeel.  did it in first/reverse and even neutral. this was the only time the jeep would move. 

so i'm thinking tranny is shot or something.   any ideas on a quick fix?  if not,  any ideas otherwise?  tranny is the 42RE and 4.0l engine. i'm debating an AW4 swap.........

Could be a shot torque converter. Does the ATF smell burnt? Or changed color.

Yeah, best bet would be check the tranny fluid and drop the pan and look for metal first.  I can give you a hand if I can use a 7/8" wrench and your driveway to do my O2 sensor.

fluid looks red. i wanna say its burnt but its not very bad. doesn't smell burnt.  i would actually say its ok.  i was going to pull the tranny do a filter swap anyways to make sure.  i was initially thinking torque converter as well.  however called autovalue and canadian tire and they don't even carry torque converters; gonna call jeepstuff tomorrow see what they have kicking aorund, but Auto Value doesn't even carry them  so debating a new tranny in general.

fras you can drop by anytime to do the o2 sensor. quick and can be done in the driveway

my dad is the one who bought your jeep the troque converter was making alot of noise when we drained it you could shake it and it was clunking around in there lol we took the trans to a tranny guy he said the trans is done he is gonna open it up to see exactily what the problem was
