Flex-a-lite Wrangler Extreme Kit
« on: May 26, 2009, 01:17:32 PM »
Has anyone got this or have any opinions? Big CFM, complete shroud, apparent convienient install with no fabrication, easy wiring, all parts included. Besides cost, is there a downside?

Good to know, thanks.

Can I ask how much you paid for it? When my Engine Fan blew up I didn't even begin pricing out a OE replacement clutch. Quadretech Sells it for $300USD before shipping/duty/etc.

Do you also mean you paid extra for the 2 speed controller? It does come with a controller already I believe?

Thanks!
Ryan

ive had the older wrangler fan 2 on my YJ for years now. has held up very well. the older controllers werent as good as the newer ones. ill probably change my controller some day.
it works very well and you notice the power gain. easy install. bolts right in. will have to do the wiring though. i think the biggest issue for wiring was getting 100% duty cycle breaker. mine has been full of mud and sand and dirt and cleans out well and has never given me an issue. im thinkin of buying a new version in my jeeps second incarnation.

FYI, I bought this and installed it with S-Fly's help on the weekend. The controller that comes with it now is knob adjustable, has AC control, and a supports a constant 'On' override (we wired it for a constant off override instead). Seems pretty good. Cost was $350 + tax at Mopac...in stock no less. Install was easy, bolted right on to the new rad with no modifications necessary. The back of the fan is only 1/2" or so from the old fan pulley bolts. Is this a concern?

I installed it as directed with the temp probe near the rad intake. Previously with the clutch fan, my temp guage was a rock at 1/4 once the jeep warmed up. No matter the situation, highway or crawling, it never fluctuated. I originally set the electric fan to come on at about 3/8 and it shut off about 1/4. However, driving around the neighborhood at only 40kph, the fan ran constantly. Strange, I figured once I was moving the fan would rarely come on.

This is not the case, when the engine is working, the rad alone doesn't do enough to cool it down even at 100kph. Without the fan, the temp creeps indefinitely. This might be because the the new fan and complete shroud (when not running) is a huge restriction to airflow or just the the previous clutch fan would still be going at least 20-30% engine speed no matter your rpm.

I now have it set to come on just over the 1/2 mark and it shuts off just below 3/8 just so it doesn't run so often. Not sure if putting the temp probe on the rad outlet would change anything as in the end you want to keep the engine temp down and that is measured at the engine out/rad in.

Yes, I removed the entire fan/clutch and just put the nuts back on to hold the pulley.

Good points, thanks,
Ryan

I've got one of these fan kit's too.      Swapped the water pump studs to 5/16"  - 24 button head fasteners and got additional clearance between the fan & pulley.

Oh   ,    my engine makes lot's of heat above 100 kph , in the summer the temp creeps up  if I  get into the throttle hard  going down  the highway ,  especially if there are hills .   Easing up on the accellerator usually brings the temps back down.    The thermocouple is near the inlet. I have a switch to kill the fan  for deep water crossing , I need to remember to use it  and    ........ to turn it back on if I happen to turn it off.      Yup   , I've busted a fan , forgetting to shut it off in deep water , that was with the smaller  # 475  version   flexalite fan  kit .  A replacement fan blade was easy to get and not expensive.

Overall   , I'm happy with it  ,but    my cooling system  could use a larger  or more efficient radiator.
