Just a reminder that fun can turn to bad real quickly.

everyone survived the roll over with minimal injury.

never let your Guard down for a second when you are on hills like that.

Wow, thats was a haaaard roll for how mellow that climb looked. It was just that slightly lower part that the drivers rear tire dipped into that threw it over.... Do you know these people?

no, just saw it on another 4x4 forum I visit. thought it was a crazy video. the climb looks pretty tame. but one little lapse or break and even a tame hill can turn into a crappy situation.

OUCH!!!

Had me scared... I thought someone rolled a beautiful XJ. Not a nice roll either way.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.
Here's your cup of STFU... ENJOY!

I was going to comment on how the XJ's made it, but i didn't want to start a war, lol.

I looks like he stalled the engine.  then let it roll back a bit, probably got nervous and hit the break at the perfect time it rolled into that dip in the hill.  bad timing all around, thank god there ok,  that was nasty and could of had a bad outcome.

yah, From reading some of the comments it really sounds like he stalled the engine. and didnt have his brakes on hard enough to stop it from rolling back.

His front locker is engaged and he spun out a little and the jeep creeped to the left and then it stalled and then he pushes the clutch in and starts to roll back wards on a tight turn on a hill. It does not help when the rocks are all loose and roll around under the tires. What can be learned here to make us all better drivers ?

The Biggest thing i think is to make sure you pay attention. Get rid of your on road habits. if you drive a standard and stall offroad the most important thing to do is push the Brakes all the way as hard as you can. then push in the clutch.

Its hard to say but it sure looks like he pushed in the clutch to soon and not hard enough on the brakes. then when he did roll back the pushing of the breaks only added to the problem.

I am not a pro off roader but for me it is a huge reminder to pay attention and evaluate the obstacle you are about to get into.

not sure if he should have stayed off the brakes? and it might have had enough momentum to continue back wards instead of tipping.

the other is if at all possible stay square with the hill. Hill climbs are danger in short wheelbase vehicles. but you will have much more success if you stay square with the hill. the obstacle that they faced in the video had a switch back with a dip on the inside of it. I would have tried to go alot wider more on the outside of it to try and avoid the dip. its never a good feeling when you have a dip on the downside of the hill.

hope this helps. if anyone has any better thoughts feel free to correct me.

i drive a '65 willys cj5, the wheel base on it is really short and makes for some interesting climbs. between the 5 i have now and the 5 befor it i have been wheeling the short wheel base for 20 some years and i have learned some things about this. there was a coment made about the use of a clutch on a hill. i NEVER use it to stop. if the jeep is going to stall, i let it stall. i then work out the plan from there. before i push in the clutch for a restart, the brakes are firmly applyed. one habit i employ regularly to start on a hill is to keep every thing engaged and just start the jeep in gear. this is a very controled way to get going again on a hill. if the jeep is a little floded and needs to have the carb cleared out (the gas pedel needs to be to the floor for this), i use a hand throtle on the gear shifter for this. that way i have a foot for each peadle, the clutch and the brake, and not trying to two foot the brake and the gas.

i NEVER NEVER back down a hill with out the trany being in reverse. it the trany is in neutral or the clutch is in, you have no control and can very easly get into huge trouble. i have even started the jeep in reverse to back down a hill and keep control. another tip is to not dig in on a hill. this can be just enough to send you over backwards. sometimes its just better to let the jeep stall.

and yes, as allready stated, allways keep the trails condition and obsticals in the front of your mind. this is whats called picking your line.
