CD Radio repair
« on: June 05, 2009, 03:37:10 PM »
the CD in my 03 grand cherokee laredo broke.  How easy is it to pull it out?  Is there a reasonable priced repair shop in Calgary?  Any guidance would be appreciated.

I'm not sure how to take the thing out, but what's wrong with it?
Depending on what's required, the cost for repairs & parts will almost add up to the cost of a new deck.
You might be better off buying a new deck.

It just won't play a cd any more. I wondered if a new one was the cheapest answer.  Where would I get a new one. (not a dealer)

Consider installing a new aftermarket headunit in the dash. You don't have to splice wires for that. You can use a wiring harness available at most car stereo stores or online car stereo retailers such as crutchfield. With the proper wiring harness it should be a plug n play job 10 minutes tops and will integrate with the factory amp and speakers (Infinity I presume). A lot of shops include install with purchase, wire kit & possibly mounting kit is extra, just check with local retailers for a quote. If your heart set on stock, check e-bay, forums, wreckers???

All depends on what your needs are.. Here are a few options. Aftermarket is cheap & you can pick out the options your after.

As Jsun mentioned above, on top of the actual deck you'll more than likely need a wiring harness, dashboard kit and possibly an fm antennae. Most major retailers will charge you about 70 bucks for all the extras, so if you have a friend at bestbuy, this would be a good time to buy him a beer and borrow his discount. And 10 minutes is going to be a stretch if you've never done this before.

tower chrysler used to send radios out to be repaired. usually $300. best bet is an aftermarket radio. with that depending on what harness you buy it may be a pig tail you will have to splice to the factory harness. the new harness wire color code should match the factory wires. so splicing is easy. deck removal is also very simple. the whole job should take no longer than an hour for someone who hasnt done it before.

You shouldn't have to splice into the factory harness, this should be plug & play, the only splicing required will be from the stereo to the aftermarket harness & this should be a 10 min job. The rest will take time to remove & put back in.
But, for $300 bones.. ouch! get a new deck...
