crysler wont do a recall
« on: June 22, 2009, 01:27:57 PM »
There is a recall for my 92 cherokee for the front rotors so when i got the truck 6 months ago i phoned big 4 and asked them about it and the service girl said if there is nothing wrong with the front brakes don't do it now, do it when something goes wrong. So i found a big crack in the drivers side last weekend and phoned up the same girl today and she says bring it in and we will see if it has ever had the rotors changed so i did. then she phones me back and says they are aftermarket and the recall cant be done (which i can totaly understand) so i ask how do they know that it has aftermarket rotors is it by partnumber? she says no we just look at them!  :o so i think to my self wait if you just look at them you cant prove that they are not factory. i do understand that the jeep has 275,000 km on it and its 18 years old but i have every service record for it from 1999 forwards and never have the front brakes been changed of had anything done to them.

should i persue this farther as they cannot prove that it has aftermarket rotors? or should i just let it go. i guess what ticks me off is the first time i phoned she was ready to order parts and book me in, then talked me out of it and said come back when you have problems. also i know a buddy with a comanchee that had this recall done as well and they did not ask him if he had aftermarket rotors (which he did ) but they did the recall anyway.

i could really use a free brake job. what does the forum think?

don't bother.  they did recalls on 99 - 02 WJs cause they had some of the worst brakes ever put on a chyrsler vehicle, however,  the recall was only good to 36000 miles.  yours is probalby no good either; like, a decade and a half ago.  figure it this way; it was a factory problem and chances are you do not have factory discs anymore considering the vehicles 18 years old.  worth a try i guess

personally i'd just pony up the 80$ for new pads and rotors and be done with it........ unless you wanna fight with them, then deal with being carless for a few days, not to mention all the other stuff they just might 'fix' (cause its in the shop right? might as well)  all 'just cause'  your entitled to a 18 year old recall........ with my WJ i had everything swapped out in less time than it would have taken to bring the damn thing down to the dealership.....  my .02  personally i don't want mechanics touching anything i own again, except maybe Eric ;) (hps4ever)

what do you think the dealership is going to use?

using the factory/cheep stuff from napa is not 'cheaping' out on your brakes.  cheaping out is going to PNP and pulling brakes off something in the yard.  THATS cheap!

keep in mind too that you can almost get a new set of tires for the money your thinking of dumping on brakes...........

how old are the ones on ur jeep now? maybe they're just due?  i would just do the new set with new calipers/discs and pads, call it good. next year if you KNOW you went through pads/discs becuase of how you drive then i'd upgrade.  personally on the YJ i don't care. it stops eventually so is all good ;)  i don't drive real fast though or like a sports car!

btw, the WJ upgrade should work. my WJ had antiloc brakes so should swap over. there are aftermarket brake kits out there too make sure it comes off a 03/04........ the 99 - 02 brakes suck. they had a recall on them too ;)

good luck with it man!

I have replaced my rotors with the $30 special from Crappy Tire and they work just fine.  My last set of brake pads lasted 3 years and that was running 31s and 33s and a lot of wheeling.  From what I have read during my web wheeling, the slotted rotors are not worth the money as they don't really improve braking.  If you want some good pads check out EBC

for 100$ u can be up and running again............ not sure why your still debating it........... its a jeep man, thats a cheap fix.......... and i'tll last more than a year...... you'll break many other things before u need brakes again. might as well save up for that!

hmmmm... so many things i could jump all over;)
i thought i recognized that station wagon in the shop today...
dude, when it comes to brakes, steering and tires. dont cheap out. those are the 3 most important things on your vehicle. if you dont want dealership parts then go aftermarket. but spend the extra cash and get good parts.
p.s. thanks for the kind words johnny!
