Author Topic: Back to stock tires for winter? (Read 3520 times)

I was thinking about doing this with my YJ, to prevent wear and to have better traction in the winter and to increase gas mileage. Right now I have 33 12.50s with 3.5 inch lift would it be too tippy with the stock tires back on? I also have no swaybar, its sitting in my garage if it should be put back in or does it need it? Or is this a dumb idea all together?

I'm going back to 235 snow tires for winter with a 2.5" lift. It'll look dorky, but I don't think it will be too tippy if I don't drive like a dumbass.

I'd worry without a sway bar though, but that's just me. I saw a YJ in front of National4WD last Saturday with:

No shocks!
No swaybars.
No trackbars.
Homemade shackle reversal with crooked and bent shackle brackets.

Let's hope this rig is parked.

My 5.5"RELA with 1" body lift is not tippy with my 31" stock tires, you will be fine.

I originally ran 33x10.5 BFG AT KO's. I went to 33x12.5 Stampede MT's. Now the BFG are my winter tire. A great winter tire. Assuming you are not dropping more than about 6" in tire size or going considerably narrower, I wouldn't see a problem. Pretty common around these parts.

Stock size is 29ish so 4 inches diffrence, it would be nice to get some BFGs or somthing similar but I just cant afford anything like that. What kind of stock tire is good in the winter, I heard that the GSA's suck in the winter.

the gsa's suck period. I like my toyo at's but would really like to have the bfg ko's. Those tires a great in winter.

I run Canadian Tire "Wintertrac" snow tires and couldn't be happier with them. They were inexpensive (about $100 for a 235) and are wearing very well. I noticed the exact same tread on a Bridgestone (probably) winter tire at the tire shop I had an alignment done at.

i ran GSA's last season, they are not that bad. It was on a light 2wd truck too.
But this year i bought some 30x9.50 BFG AT ko's from Costco for $153/tire.

Thanks for the replys guys. What do you think for just a strictly winter tire, becasue I have almost new MT's I don't do any winter wheeling due to school so I think that BFG's might be overkill.

It's a very, very good idea.
