fan removal '04 4L
« on: July 19, 2009, 03:40:06 PM »
So how can I spin the big nut, without the whole pulley turning? I don't want to put a set of chain grips on the pulley and mess it all up.

I am following this writeup: http://www.4x4xplor.com/fan-clutch.html

Any thoughts?

Looking for a cloth strap-wrench in the meantime...

there are 2 holes in the front of the water pump pulley. if you can get something into those holes to hold the pulley solid, then you can put your wrench on the nut and turn it off. or use an air hammer on the edge of the nut to back it off with a sharp hit from the hammer. down side to this is its hard on the nut.

Thanks for the tips, but I got it.
A pain in the posterior!

Electric fan setup nearly complete. Convenient of flexalite to not include an overflow bottle bracket, or extra holes in the shroud for ease of controller install.

ive got that kit on my YJ and in bolted right. but the yj doesnt need the other bits bolted to it. and mine is kinda older so the controler was part of the fan shroud. great power gain i must say. and the control over the fan is pretty handy. just dont forget it in the off position;)

Oh wow, I haven't tied mine into the ac yet, was gonna wait and see with that.
As for the cut-off switch, I was going to put a switch on the ignition sense line to interrupt the fan, rather than run more wiring.

WOW!
I should have done this years ago!
Taking the mechanical fan off really livened up the power out of the 4L, 5th gear has power and use for other than cruising!
Though I have to relearn how the motor sounds without the roar of the fan, she is quiet, and powerful!

Not to mention fuel efficient! I went from 300-330 km on a tank of gas (city or highway, didn't matter); and got 400 on the highway!! I made Revelstoke from my place in Beddington with 10L to spare! Before, I would have to fillup in Golden.

Highly recommended for ALL 4L users!

I bought a Flex-A-Lite Wrangler Extreme setup from Mopac, about $330. http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/jeep-wrangler.html

As for XJ's, I don't know, I thought they had 2 fans, one electric and one mechanical. There are some pretty good XJ/ZJ/WJ resources out there on the internets, you could try there. http://naxja.org
