New Gears and Spedometer dont match... Any Help
« on: August 15, 2009, 11:29:55 PM »
I wanted to ask if anyone knows HOW or WHERE I can get my spedometer recalibrated.  I called Mr.Spedometer and they said they dont do the labour anymore and cant fix it for me. The dealership could do it if my Jeep didnt have 33inch tires and was stock. Mopac says there is nothing out there for a 1998 Jeep TJ to fix this problem. One guy at National 4x4 said it cant be done and the other said it can be done but they cant do it. Does anyone have a solution for me.

Thanks a lot to everyone who told me to go with a 4:56 gear ratio. I love being able to have my 5th gear back. After getting the 4:56's I am glad that I didnt go with the 4:88's. I think that would have been too much and I am quite comfortable running 33" tires I have decided.

might have to do a little surfing but superlift make a signal adjuster that plugs in-line. Has a dial or two on it. Might be what you're looking for.

Thanks a bunch. That really looks like it could work. One of the guys at Modern says that all I have to do is find where the dial is in my Jeep and switch it over to make it match my spedometer. He said all jeeps until 2003 are able to just turn the little dial. After 2003 everything is done electronically. Do you know the little dial that I am talking about?

No idea what "little dial" hes talking about.  How would that work unless the TJ came with every gear and tire combo programmed into the computer?  Most, if not all, of the guys on JF are using the new gears to keep the speedo at the correct reading.

I am not sure how that little dial would work at all. I thought of the same questions that you asked and he was supposed to call me back but never did so I never got to ask my questions. I will try calling him again on Monday and I will see what he was talking about and get an answer.

Does that Spedometer Tooth that "WhiteOut" was talking about how does that work? is it just a different size then the stock one?

WOW! This is a very simple problem to solve on early model TJs, you just have to swap out the speedo gear in the t-case with one with the correct tooth count. There are speedo charts available on various forums and sites like Advance Adapters that show you what tooth count gear to ues for each combination of tire size and axle gear ratio. As for you going with 4.56 gears and not 4.88s....You had no reason to fear 4.88s, I just had 4.88s installed and I run 33"tires and I love the powerband I'm in and how I can use cruise control uphill towing my small trailer.

That is UNBELIEVABLE that National 4x4 doesn't know how to correct the speedo on jeepTJs! What a joke!

That's exactly it! I'm from outta town and when I do come to calgary I like to go into National 4WD. The last time I was in there I talked to a salesman that was new to me ( I only get in there every 6 months or so) and was looking for 31's in a 15" rim size.

He tells me they don't really have much of that anymore cause they're too small, and most of their customers are guys from the rigs, and are buyin tires for their diesel trucks. 20's and bigger! Then he starts talkin about 33's for a 17" rim.....I tell him I don't have or want 17" rims, and of course he says they have good deals on the rims as well. I don't give a flying f*&k about 17's, especially for my Jeep.

I left and probly won't be back for a while. Ended up getting my tires through ESI on the site here. Couldn't be happier!

I was really confused the other day when I was calling around trying to figure out how to solve my problem. Everywhere I called had different ways to solve my problem but not a single person told me about the "spedometer tooth" thing that WhiteOut told me about.

Like I was telling the WhiteOut lastnight the guys from National told me there was a dial that I had to turn and my problem would be solved. I really think that some of you guys should go and work at National and teach those guys a thing or two about their Jeeps. I have learned more about my Jeep in two weeks then I have talking to the guys at National and Modern in five years.

WagoneerXJ I agree that when you go into National looking for one part for some reason they will always try to talk you out of the part you are looking for and try to sell you another part. Its so hard to talk to those guys for some reason.

That is Fantastic Tinkerer... I will try to tackle that at home. I was going to ask one of your guys to help me change that. With that link I think I will be able to manage. If I get myself into a pickle I will ask for your help then. haha

In the last few paragraphs he is talking about using "ATF"... What is "ATF"? I know its a simple question but I thought I would ask just to be sure.

When I try to figure this out and get stuck which one of you should I call for help if I need it? haha

Thanks a bunch

I bought my speedo gear through Courtesy.  Just do a search for the speedo gear chard and one page I recall had the part number.  Just took the part number to the dealer and had the gear the next day.

http://www.redrock4x4.com/tech/speedo_chart.php

Yours should be this.

52067639

When you put the gear in make sure the number range (on the plug) that your gear is is at the 6 o'clock position.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.
