Custom rear bumper with tire swing

Hey All;

Planning out a rear bumper with a tire swing... have pretty much everything figured out, with the exception of 2 things.

1. What should I use for a pin hinge for the swing?
2. What should I use for the latch to lock the arm in?

and where's the best place to get these 2 things?

I just built one , to get ideas on a latching mechanism , I looked  at a number of manufacturers web sites , most have a gallery of pics . Go look at Modern or National , if they have a bumper in stock / on display , look at the latch .

I used to build trailers to pull behind snowmobiles , the latch design on those was a scaled down version of what many bumper/tire carrier use . Basically a T handle with a captive spring , inside a tube , a washer is welded to the shank of the T handle , the spring provides down force against the washer.

The hinge pin , I made that too , I have a 12" x 36" lathe , settled on a 1" fine thread  , bushings ?  , motorcycle fork bushings or other similar bushings would be sufficient .

Im in the process of building a tire carrier and need to get my hands on a good hinge. Anyone know a local spot I can buy one that can just be welded onto my bumper and good to go? I found one that might work at Gregg Dist but not sure if it will last...

Kudos on the necro post.   I got a spindle and race assembly on line a few years back...  Has held up well holding a 35... With a 100 lbs of mud at times.    I will see if I can find them again.   Its basically a axle spindle.   If I were doing it again, I would go the fold down like poison spider folks do

Anyway, think about using two hiem joints stacked on top of each other. By threading them in and out you can adjust the alignment and compensate for sag.

Hmmmm, not a bad idea! I was at PA on the weekend and saw some heim joints that got me thinking. I guess I would need to just thread them both into round tube and use that as the carrier frame?

I think the one I saw used two lengths of box tube for the bottom support with nuts welded into them for the hiems to thread into.

When I did mine I used a trailer spindle. Took a long time to grind/plasma off the tire mountng flange so I could weld the bottom support to it. Also even though I welded it on so that with no weight on it it was almost a 1/2" high on the far end, once the tire weight was on, it sagged enough to hit when closing.

The latch I got from Greggs Distributing. I think Acklands has them as well, Jensenn works there maybe he can check for you or look at their online catalouges. Keeps it really tight and no rattling.

Someone directed me to these hinges at KMS...think they would do the job or be too weak? Could drill and thread a grease nipple in there..

I could see those working if you were doing a double hinge setup.  They seem a little small if you were doing a single.  Do you know what the diameter of the inner pin is?

There is nothing holding it together other than gravity. Hit a big bump or come down off a ledge on it and it will pop off.

Still voting for the double hiem.

BTW, grinding off the flange out that axle stub sucked.
