4.0l tj ax15 swap to 4.0l aw4... have a couple questions.
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:47:40 PM »
Ok heres the plan for my TJ:

4L (tired engine), clutch blown, ax15 and np231 I think?

What I have available:

4L, aw4, dana 300 (ouf of a 98 Cherokee, minus the 300 which I have adapter for)

Im thinking it will save a bunch of time just swapping out the whole engine/tranny/t case from the XJ to my TJ. I want to run an AW4 in my jeep anyways.

I know I will have to add a tranny cooler and most likely modify rear cross member, but besides that is this pretty much a direct bolt in?? No computer swaps?

Driveshafts will be different lengths.
The AW4 is computer controlled so you will have to figure out how to install the computer and wiring harness and integrate it into the TJs wiring harness. The 4.oL uses a different computer for auto and stick applications as well.

The shifter will have to be installed for the AW4. To do it right the the brake safty interlock and ignition key interlock should also be installed but could be left out. This means though that the tranny could be put in gear without your foot on the brake(like older vehicles). It also means that the tranny could be shifted into N without the key in the ignition or that the key could be removed without the tranny being in park.

So you go to the qucikiemart for a second, jump out and forget its not a stick anymore and leave it in gear. Come out and its rolled away......

Did that a couple times after I converted my 5psd XJ to auto. Found it up against the garage door in the morning. You get used to it.....

Personally I'd just swap out the motor and do the clutch, you'd do the clutch anyway if you were pulling the motor.

WAAA??!!? Who told you that? Maybe if you took the whole drivetrain out and were doing it in your dirt driveway without power tools....

I would think that a shop could do a clutch in a TJ in under 4 hours. I pretty sure I could do one in my garage with air tools but no hoist in under 6. I know I can swap a whole 4.0l in an XJ in under 8.

Once the tranny is out its usually less than an hour to R&R the clutch. If you heard 15hrs on the net it probably was some kid working in his driveway with no power tools, THEN I could see it taking 15hours. Still  thats an easy weekend....
