27 vs 30 Spline
« on: October 27, 2009, 07:05:50 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying some upgraded shafts for the front turdy. Is there much of a difference in strength between the stock 27 spline and the upgraded 27 spline shafts?
How about a difference between the 27 spline upgraded shafts and the 30 spline upgraded shafts?
The crappy thing (in my eyes) about the 30 spline shafts is that you have to go with a speciality locker....

I believe the chrome shafts are about 30% stronger than the stock.  Also the chromo 27s would be about the same strength as the stock 30 spline.  If you go with the 30 spline you can use rubi shafts as spares

If you are running 35s or less on a HP D30, I think the chromo 27s will be fine

remember, if you upgrade your shafts to the chromoly 30 splines, you will transfer the weak part of the axle to the pinion/ring gear.  alot more costly to fix, specially on the trail..........  i think its a worthwhile upgrade though. for sure, if you plan on going with a locker.

i wouldn't exactly call it a specialty locker.  my 30 spline arb was the same price as the 27 spline arb - for the same housing.

if you are changing the carrier anyway, go with 30 spline and run ruby shafts which aren't too hard to find.  otherwise, order some hardened 27's and a brace for the D30 so it doesn't flex as much.

Exactly.  I talked to one of the ARB reps and I can actually order the 30 spline side gears and convert my 27 spline to 30 without having to buy a whole new locker

This is the response I got from ARB.  You need to have the RD100 and not the older model.  This correspondence was back in Dec '07 so prices might be a little different

"Scott,
If it's an RD100 as your invoice says then you will be good to go on side gears. Figure about 175.00 for the 2 new gears. Install requires disassembly of the locker, but that can be handled by any one reasonably mechanical. It's pretty easy and we can talk you through the process if need be. Just make sure you ask for tech after you order the parts.

Speaking of that, here are the part numbers you would need: 131603H for (1) 131503H for (1)"

I hope that helps

Ruby shafts aren't hard to find?!?!? Is there a special rock some where that they are hiding under??? LOL or you mean buying shock ones from Chrysler?

i didnt say arn't hard, i said "not too hard".  see them for sale quite often on various boards when people upgrade.  i looked at the option of using them when i upgraded my front diff and they were avail when i asked around.

Are the rear D44 shafts from a Rubi the same spline as a D44 from a regular 05 TJ?
