YJ Front Diff Noise...Solved!!!

Well...

I finally get he engine squared away, and lo and behold....more issues.

When driving in 2wd I get a clicking sound from the front diff.

It kind of sounds like a bad CV in a front wheel drive (same kind of sound), or sounds like something not meshing right.

Any suggestions?

I think I have it narrowed down to the axle u-joints.

Does anyone have a good suggestion on replacement u-joints for the Dana 30?

Went with brand "x" from Napa, greased em weekly and still have play in em after 1 000km. Going to get the Spicers and give em a try.

I can get the Precision Super strength u-joints for a really good price, anyone tried these?

how are your unit bearings? any play in them? jack up the jeep and test for play. they click too.  not a bad idea to replace all the joints though. i'll be doing that too

Not Auto Value, but I believe the same ones.

It is a constant noise (clunking) I really notice it when slowing down, as the "wind" noise inside the YJ is not condusive to hearing anything at higher speeds.

I sound like the front passenger side mostly, but, could also be front yolk as well.

Spend the money and get spicers, they are worth the money.  Go to Drive System Inc or Pats Driveline.  If you are lazy and don't grease your jeep often (like me), then get the sealed spicers.

So I had a chance to jack her up tonight, and holy crap.....the driver-side Uj was dancing like it was on Dancing with the stars!!!

Time to get the axles out...should I do both sides at the same time?

It coudn't hurt to replace both sides? You already have the tools out. Do one side at a time in case you have problems; you could always look at the other side for reference.

Yup do both.  Once you have the other side out you will probably be able to see that it needs replacement as well.

It's amazing how easy it really is to do the axle joints.

Roughly 45min per side, including smoke breaks.
