winch issues
« on: November 11, 2009, 04:59:07 PM »
hey i got a power plant and resently it has been a pain in the butt

now i had enough and i ripped it apart and cleaned all the connections and rebuilt it and it still didnt work

by not working i mean some times it will pull in .. other times it will only let out  or it wont work at all and yo ucan hear the click when pressing the button
the air compressor didnt want to work either

so after all the rebuilding i was up set and hit it with a hammer

guess what it works not

so can anyone give some imputt on winch problems

does something need to be replaced or just a loose wire somewhere

sounds like loose wire somewhere Jeff; I had problem with my winch it would only spool out, I had to take the control button apart and fix a contact wire, as for the compressor like Johnny says check your wire terminals and switches. a multimeter or test light will help some if you got one
I started out with nothing and so far I have most of it left

could be your solenoids, or even your switches if you have a multimeter you can check the switches.

Do you have a dedicated ground line going from the neg battery post to the winch? Is there a good gnd connection between the solenoid pack and the winch?

On my warn 9.5ti I've had a problem twice now where the brush holder inside the motor loses its gnd contact with the motor case. The brush holder plate is aluminum and the case is steel. Corrosion builds between the two and causes the brush holders to lose their gnd. Fixing it requires removing the motor, taking it apart and cleaning the surface between the holder and case.

The PowerPlant is also a bit more complicated than most winches - there's a sort of  "transmission" that changes the motor from operating the winch drum to operating the compressor. If it's stuck between those two positions, it may be causing you a problem.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

If this is the case then its a bigger problem since the clutch piece is plastic and the lever is metal. Sometimes cracks or breaks the little plastic thing in the winch.

it switchs from winch to compressor very easy  no forcing needed .. and when it works it works   but it seems not to work more then it does

Have you tried calling Warn?

Even if it's not under warranty, they may be able to help diagnosing the problem, and tell you exactly where to get any parts you may need...or tell you what to do to fix it...or where to take it for repair.

I've never had to call them myself, by I've heard a lot of good feedback about Warn customer service.

Listen to Todd on this one Jeff. Warn has an excellent technical support line that you can call. I had some issue's with my ancient pre- 8274  winch. The tech. support personnel helped me diagnose the problems over the phone. I managed to get my winch working. It's worth a shot.

More often then not, the remote is the cause of most warn winch issues.

Find another remote and try that, or try your remote in another winch.
