If you were in Oklahoma shopping for new XJ lift and performance parts, where would you shop?

Be careful and do your research on this one Stan. I was in Denver this past spring and purchased an ARB Locker from a major 4x4 chain-store. I thought I was saving a bundle in the process. I was there for over a week, but was saddled with "fees" when I hit the airport coming home.  I didn't save much in the end. I would shop locally(Canada) and get parts through North Shore Offroad or Northridge4x4 instead.

That's right Todd. They opened up the box and asked what it was. I got hit up with some ridiculous fee for something(forgot what it was) and I had it stowed in my suitcase which was over the weight limit(another fee) ...groan...

I won't make that mistake again. I try to support Canadian business now.

I would give 4x4shops in Canada a shot first Stan. Be safe up in the south. Run very fast if you hear banjos!

The only time it's really worth purchacing stuff there is if you drive down, have it installed (or do it yourself) and then drive back. They can't charge you fees for what is alreay on you vehichle.

If you are in the USA for 7 days by car, you get $750 free purchases. They will than charge you 5%GST on anything over 750 that you declare.

But the CDN dollar is very good and if you bought $3000 USD of stuff, it would cost you about $3200 + 122.50 =3322.50 CDN for 3000USD.

If flying and it is Vegas, than you are hit big time with weight restrictions.

And they can charge you for new stuff installed. You have to PROVE that the new stuff was on before you went down.
Good luck with that if you get a nasty customs officer. Of course, if you declare it, than no problems, you just pay as above.

I drove down last fall and picked up a MOPAR soft top in Montana (private sale). I was under 48 hours in the US, so no exemptions. I declared it at the border - they charged me  5% GST and that was it.

Maybe it's a different deal with respect to flying?

5% is right for driving. If over 7 day stay, you get the first $750 exempt.
This does not apply to booze or smokes.

Extra fees (duty) may also apply for items manufactured outside of North America.

If they were imported into US the US duties will have been paid, however, there may still be Canadian duties due if items are then brought into Canada.

I was nailed this way with some equipment I purchased a few years ago - not sure that things have changed in the last few years. Typically when crossing the border by vehicle after an extended stay they don't look at every item, however, something unique as airline luggage could spark their interest.

So, I realized that Oklahoma City is a ghost town.  There's nothing here and nobody out on the streets.  Their rush hour traffic downtown, is a Sunday drive compared to Calgary.

OKoffroad.com is based out of Tulsa, just an hour and a half away. They operate online only but they may let you order then pick up parts there

Nice site but kinda expensive.  They didn't have anything for XJ's.  Apparently you have to go to Texas if you want parts, guess I'll just order from a Canadian company when I get home.
