It is not up to the border to stop you from entering with no plates but it is their responsibility to stop you from bringing an ILLEGAL vehicle in as set out by Transport Canada.
Your probably right. After bringing 5 across... the border guys simply seemed like tax collectors to me... I had no idea they could actually impound vehicles they "think" are modified (i.e. Jeep on 33's). I agree the lots of lift and big arse tires are pretty obvious for anyone to pick out. Good thing I only brought across stockers or older than 15 years
I actually had a CDN border guy ask me about plates and an in transit sticker one time. They probably have all sorts of authority that we don't know about and its up to them what they decide to chase down on any given day.
Anyway... good luck picking up the Jeep... she's a beauty
