BIGGEST TIRE ON a '98 XJ?
« on: December 09, 2009, 11:00:53 AM »
hello jeep fiends, i recently bought a 98 xj. 2 door. a friend of mine bought one back in 98 but i remember it looked different- sat higher, the tires looked beefier. anyone know how big i can go with tires, and what is the easiest (cheapest) non-lift way to get it sitting up higher (i'm thinking  new shocks will improve its height?)

would also be interested in hearing about any lift kits anyone has for sale. nothing radical as i dont have the coin to get new rims and rubber.

any and all advice appreciated... thanks

You can put any size you want with a little trimming ;)

if you want to keep it stock  w/o lift ... may be some 29" or 30' tires but it might rub.

Figure out the lift that you want and then get tires.

Biggest tire without rubbing will be a 235.  Anything bigger and the back will rub, and the 235s might rub if the springs have sagged

Scott's correct.  I first tried 245's on the xj and they would rub anytime I hit a small bump.  Also 16" rims with 235's look better then 15" rims with 235's.
03 TJ - 6" body lift and 31 MTR's, other wise stock.

My dad tried the 240s on a 16" rim and they still rubbed and he landed up with 235s on the rubi rims

wheel spacers are fine IMHO if you torque them down correctly, but I am biased as I have a set for sale right now. ;D

I managed to squeeze on a set of Yoko Geolanders onto my 98 XJ (255/55/R18's) which is roughly a 30" tire with almost no rubbing. (If anybody is wondering why I got 18's it is because I picked up the rims for next to nothing and used them for road trips)

The only thing I had to change was the rear shocks; I installed a set of Monroe Max-Air adjustable shocks and it added an inch or so of height which stopped all rubbing.

I wanted a Jeep... but the wife gave me a Hummer!
