Powerplant ?

Does anyone have any experience with the Warn Powerplant winch ?
 I know the idea of a combo unit is good, but from what I've read on JU they've had some reliability issues.

i have the 12000 lbs  version       its my first and only winch i have every owned   so i dont have much to go on


it pulls well . its always worked when i needed it

the air compressor puts out a good amount of air and PSI    i run a 7 gallon tank with it so i have even more volume .


i had my first problem with it the other day .. and it was that the compressor didnt want to turn on ., i can seeem to find the problem  but i have not had a good chance to put the time in .

depends on the price you can get for one u might be better just picking up a 9000 winch and gettting some kind of onboard air system .. but it is nice tohave both with out taking up any extra room

Yep, that is what I was thinking ... save some space.

it might save space but it also blocks air flow to your rad and with my xj in the heat of summer i want as much air flow as possible to keep the 4.0l cool. this is just something to consider when you are buying a winch. i have also been told that the powerplant does not work great as a compressor compared to other onboard units for the price you pay.

I have one but it hasn't seen a lot of use due to health issues this summer which are hopefully behind me. Modern Motors gave me a great price. I wanted some step into onboard air as well so it seemed like a logical move at the right price. It's handy for inflatable toys camping as well. I got the Warn Air Accessory kit as well to extend reach to the tent, etc. It's a heavy brute at 100 lbs but the Warn 9,500 lb non-air alternatives weren't really all that much less. It appears to severely block the grill and air passage on a TJ but in fact I've never seen ANY difference on the temp gauge and I was certainly watching closely initially. I just wish I could land some form of cover for it.

I can't remember who it was, but they used an old spare tire cover and made it fit.

That was Todd( wsquared) I sold him an old tire cover from a Grand Cherokee. I believe it was vinyl and he used some grommets and bungees to hold it down. Way cheaper than my Warn cover.

Interesting as I have my factory spare cover just laying around when tire upgrades made it too small.

Further Powerplant thoughts: I like Waytec's tank system and as I learn more I like the idea of using the Powerplant to replenish an onboard tank of some type. I see Warn even offer them. It's a work in progress and I have much to learn.

That's exactly right. It's working beautifully. It was a great deal, even though I didn't get any "extra" meat-based products with it

You can also use an old gym bag, put the zipper on the top so you can still get access to it, put the winch inside the bag and the bold it back down, or cut the bottom and slip it over and tie it down with some bungies. plus its fun to watch the punks try and steal it if the winch is bolted thru it, the only problem is that the bag wears out fairly quick as they area not made for that kind of abuse

I will never be able to find a pic of it again, but I had seen a TJ a while back that had the dual tube style front bumper, he had sealed the the tubes and had used them for his on board air tanks running off of a modified AC compressor. Points for being creative but I can't imagine "blowing-out" one of those tanks in a collision.

I have been looking at buying a winch in the next few months and from what I have read the biggest complaints are the added weight and blocked airflow, I think this can be said for just about every winch though. It just sucks that I know that after buying a winch I will probably need to upgrade the cooling system, and then I will need new springs for the front, this will lead me to deciding to just go with a lift, and then my tires will look to small, and after I replace those I will need better gearing, which means I will need new axles and lockers.  And then my wife will leave me for spending all my money on the jeep , but then I will have for time the jeep

as for air flow to the rad i have NOT had a problem yet   i actually find that the winch helps to block the mud from getting into the rad so it helps keep it cleaner and the fan has no problem keeping the rad cool

So if I'm to understand it, you're using the Powerplant to keep the tank at the ready?
