I do gear set's all the time, mostly Dana 60 and 14's. Yes have some specialty tools. You can spend anywhere from 3 hrs to 10 hrs on a set and boy does it suck when you get a stubborn set. If you are using Yukon with full install kits it goes better. Saving money on gear sets just adds install time. Yes ive noticed getting patterns easier on on Yukons...If you run 300 hp and up and big tires, don't even think about it. Installs on 8.8's usually require grinding teeth on ring gear as your pin will not fit. does not void warranty lol.

What you will need, and I have in my garage
-4 post hoist with air jacks
-freezer on top of beer frige-beer fridge should be stocked
-oven
-spreader or BFHammer
-very large selection of shims
-spare set of setup bearing for every diff you look work on augered out
-grinder/or puller for removing old bearings off carrier/pinion if rebearing. I never pull as I dont have time
-paste and dial indicator
-knowledge of how to read numbers stamped on pinion or tool to read pinion depth will greatly increase install time.


For the above reason and the patience required, deliver to the gear center or aquavelent or a very qualified person that may offer warranty.

Im a licenced heavy duty mech, and this is not an offer to do installs. just my 2 scents

Additionally, I would really be dubious of any "warranty" on an axle with non stock parts inside and non-stock tires, being used in "off-road or competition use" or whatever...I would guess they would probably try to weasel out and blame it on improper use etc. I provided |the gear centre with brand new, unopened gear set and instasll set, seals and bearings. when I picked up the diff, the bill said "no warranty-customer supplied parts"...understandable that they wouldn't warranty the parts, why would they, but they also wouldn't warranty their install. just because I provided brand new, yukon gears and install kit...and they charged me over $1200!! bastards!

Maybe I'm a fool, but I use a shop press and bearing puller which means I don't need a freezer or oven...I do have a beer fridge tho, it is stocked up to your specs as well!
I never pull as I don't have time?
-I have found it much quicker to pull bearings than to carefully cut through them and then break them with a chisel. additionally, the old bearings can then be used for setup berarings, no?
why do you need a hoist?

 Assists in picking shims to start with-not trying to be smart or say that you don't know-but some may be interested"period"

By the way I own a business that has 20 mechanics on staff, and I also have a full blown shop on my acreage.

As far as a fridge and oven, I've seen gear shops even use them. Just an eavailable method for someone with out a press is all. And on removal of... there is gear sets that do not have room to get puller behind bearing. I have also seen gears chipped from a people that jam pullers in where they do not fit.

I use a hoist cause, i do not like to bend over, remove diff etc and have a bad back. nothing more, nothing less.

Please do not get on defense thinking people are attacking you or your ability. It is for knowledge of the general public as stated at the begining, that this is not an easy task, and to hire a shop, you etc.

Tell me more, I am curious...
So you've had a problem with good patterns that howl? on new or used gears?
And what about the howly grands? did you replace the gearsets? or just bearings?
I'm not asking to second-guess, just to learn!

'93-'95 ZJs are known to have howling rear diffs, down't seem to cause a problem, just annoying. I've tried to correcto two, mine and my sisters. Both had ok patterns that I tried to re-set a bit better but neither seemed to help. Probably cause the gears were already worn in. One got new pinion bearings but all the rest were good.  Often its difficult to change the pattern on a used gears set and not have it howl. Often once they are broken in they don't like running in a different spot.

x2.  mines loud. after ripping it apart only to find the bearings in like new condition as was the rest of the diff (clear fluid, no shavings etc)  i've just come to accept its loud.  but it meshes nicely with the sound of my mud terrains.

Dont install beat up looking used lockers. Specially ARB's. They will come back to haunt you. Again, and again, and again.
