antilock or not
« on: January 19, 2010, 11:19:39 AM »
so as some of you might know i am swaping everything that is good from my 92 limited xj onto my 95 sport. there are many reasons i am doing this but one thing i am uncertain about is the antilock system. so i thought i would post and see what everyone thinks about antilock and wheeling? i know that this would be a hugh undertaking and am not worried about the time it would take me or the actual install, this is my dd and it is our main camping, touring and anything fun vehicle. the 95 has an air bag but i would kinda like the antilock system on it for safety. and yes i also realize the antilock system is not the best out there.

so really is there any advantage when i wheel to have the antilock?

I pulled the fuse for mine years ago. I could never get my breaks to work like normal untill I pulled all the abs stuff out and changed the boster out for a normal one. The abs has a lot of wires and vac lines you would have to run a whole new harness under the hood.
Just pump the breaks like the old days if you start slideing. Maybe get sum breaking tips from Fraser......

Ive got abs on mine and for four wheeling they suck . On the pavement the are not the best abs system out there.  If you are thinking of swapping abs on to the 95 , do not do it , DON,T BE KRAZY . To many head aches when it malfunctions. When wheeling the abs light comes on half the time due to mud around the tone rings or frozen ice. Lots of other issues as well.

Many 4x4s actually used to automatically cut out the ABS when 4wd was engaged. What does that tell you about ABS?

There are merrits to having it and not. Theory of ABS is that it keeps the wheels from locking which results in a loss of steering control, this is a good thing when sliding down a hill. However being able to lock the wheels and cause snow or dirt to pile up in front of the tire helps as well. Also in some cases where you just want to stop period having the brakes lock and skid will stop you in a shorter distance than having them pulse. Not always but sometimes...

I would NOT go thru the work of putting an ABS system on. As said above they are pretty sensitive to wheeling and often cause more problems than not.

I have driven both types of systems in several types of vehicles.... personally I do not like ABS;

In a Non-ABS vehicle I have the choice of locking up or pulsing (manually) in an ABS system you do not have the choice, If you are use to  your rig and how it brakes with out the ABS then I would not swap it in.
