Sirius satellite reception problems
« on: January 23, 2010, 11:38:35 AM »
Is anybody else having problems with Sirius reception lately? I haven't had a good signal for the last week or so.

How do you have sound going through the radio?  Mine is using the FM reciever.  If someone else pulls up on the same FM station, I get their progamming until we move apart.  Overhead lines, cloud cover and garbage trucks (I know  ???)  also have caused me problems.  I haven't had any real issues in the last couple of weeks.

Where you position your antenna can have a fairly large effect on your reception.

I moved my original XM (grey market) receiver and the Sirius receiver that replaced between trucks almost monthly (fleet vehicles for work), and I noticed that I got the best performance when the antenna was sitting right in the middle of a large patch of flat metal - preferably the roof.

When I mounted it on the edge of the roof, it could be touch and go at times. I also noticed that the "built in to the receiver" FM transmitters that come with the XM and Sirius radios are pretty feeble. When two FM signals are competing on the same frequency, you will only hear the strongest one...the weaker one totally vanishes.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I have mine connected through the aux input on the factory stereo. Up until the last week or so, the reception has been flawless. The antenna is mounted above the windshield just over the rearview mirror, it has been there for almost 2 years with no problems.
It was very, very rare to ever lose the signal.

I guess my question should have been do you guys notice any reduction in reception just over the last couple of weeks?

I've only noticed losses around overhead lines.

when I had my satellite radio i had issues until i installed an antenna booster. it connects the satellite radion directly to the factory radio antenna connector. I never had reception issues after that.

Double check the cable from the antenna. If you've got it running through a door or anywhere else that makes it vulnerable, then after a couple years it may be time for a new antenna. The cable is the weakest part, and being such a tiny piece of wire makes it worse. I've replaced my father's antenna already and he's had it for a couple years too. Also, if you're removing the unit alot, check the antenna connector to be sure it's still tight

OK, so I had lots of reception problems yesterday.  When I was going north  :o

Using all my rocket scientist knowledge, it's a combination of the earths rotation and it's realtionship to the sun, global warming, solar flares, climate change (which is different from gobal warming), the fact that Howard Strern keeps threatening to retire,  and that the end of the world is mere 2 years away according to the Mayan calendar...

Oh yeah,
The CRTC which is putting an extra tax on satellite radio (renew now!).  Okay... it's definitely because of the CRTC...   Ottawa...   go figure...
