Where to buy new winch solenoids?
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:40:16 PM »
Im trying to get this old Champion winch working, I pulled the motor and cleaned it all up. Sometimes the solenoids click and sometimes they just barely...twitch. The winch works to spool in but not out. Im thinking there is 1 or more faulty solenoids.

Where can I buy these??

I've tried Crappy tire, auto value and PA.

Gregg dist maybe?

I've seen a fair number of solenoids but nothing quite like that. Do those bottom plastic plates come off? You might be better off trying to adapt something else.....

No the plates dont come off...its pretty much a 1 peice sealed unit it seems.

Not sure about starter solenoids...there's gotta be a direct replacement for these out there somewhere...OR someone has an old Champion collecting dust they want to part out?...

I found a similar looking one at AutoValue, it has the 2 big and 1 small wire terminals like these,  but it mounts on its side so they would have to sit loose inside the winch..

You might be able to rig any Continous/constant duty 12volt solenoid. Most solenoids that have the two small posts require one of the posts to be grounded like any relay. A solenoid with one post is internally grounded through it's mounting service. The key ingredient here is to have a good quality solenoid for constant duty. A ford solenoid (old fender mount) will not last as they are not constant duty and are only like to be latched for maybe 8 seconds. Get one that takes good amperage as well. Getting one the same could be a challange, check cole hersee product?  Also check with amperage tech in NE calgary

I actually use these solenoids instead of relays on my truck for fan and accessories as I can run upto 40 amps for long periods without problems and corrosion. If they die you attach both wires to one post and drive home.

Canadian Tire sells a constant duty solenoid in the RV section. It looks just like a Ford unit and sells for about 20 bucks each.
I believe they are rated for 80 amps continous and 160 amp spike.

I have used one on my last Jeep for the dual battery setup and it worked flawlessly for over 3 years.

I also believe when the solenoids are used in a winch application they use 2 at a time (hence 4 solenoids per winch), if that's the case, 4 of these should work fine.

Good call, thanks. I gave them a shout and talked to a helpful guy for a bit. I'm gonna bench test the motor to make sure it actually will work both ways. If that works out and it is the solenoids, they have them for about $10/each plus shipping. Probably work out alot cheaper than the ones I've found in town for $35 each.

Haha! Yup...will be great.  8)
